FB songs if someone heard would most likely mistake them for being Pixies songs:

massif centrale
dog in the sand
bartholemew
robert onion
LA
thalosocrassy
king and queen of siam

i know there are more, but i am out of ideas.

This is a theory i've had since the itunes 4 song ep came out and to a lesser extent, show me your tears. The song show me your tears(on the itunes ep) definetly sounds like a pixies song except hes restraining himself, though towards the end he starts to let it rip. If frank screamed a little louder, it'd definetly be a pixies song, at least to my ears.

Plus in my opinion, listening to the show me your tears album it seemed he was trying to get back into a more commercial style of songwriting, its a more immediate album than his other recent efforts. This is just a theory but after i heard the song show me your tears, i felt that the pixies reunion was most likely going to happen and possibly he'd write a new pixies album because i think its more overtly pixies than anything he's done in a while along with the slightly more commercial than usual(though country twinged and full of later career "frankisms")show me your tears album.

I'm not saying a new pixies album is a great idea, I'm just saying.

So. Bay

how could I forget that one?

Definitely So. Bay. It could have BEEN a Pixies song.

With all due respect and honor, I don't understand the discrepancy. Is it not possible for one man to have more than one name? Wasn't Derek Olson also "Blim Blinkfast", "Jorge Garrison", and "Ratbert"?

"so. bay."

Listen to the riff. Listen to its foreboding surf tone. It seems about every Frank Black album included a track or few that sounds like the quick, quirky material he played with the Pixies. The "So. Bay" riff is classic in the meandering, menacing "surf ballad" sense, the Pixies also produced.

On "Frank Black," it was "Los Angeles" (which would have sounded right on "Trompe le Monde,") also "Ten Percenter," "Brackish Boy," and "Parry the Wind, High, Low."

On "Teenager of the Year," it was "Whatever Happened to Pong," "Thallasocracy," "Two Reelers," "Hostess with the Mostest," and "Pie in the Sky." Some of these might have sounded most at home on "Bossanova," and "Surfer Rosa."

On "Cult of Ray," it was maybe "The Marsist" and maybe "Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb." Both might have fit on "Trompe."

Etcetera. Blather.

Anyway, no one has yet mentioned "So. Bay," and I think that one sticks out among the tracks on "Pistolero." I disagree that "I Want Rock and Roll" and other songs of similar ilk on that album (e.g. "I Love Your Brain") sound Pixies-like. They remind me of '80s So. Cal punk in the vein of Minutemen and The Descendents. "Men in Black" fits this category, also. Straight-ahead, somewhat poppy post-punk, no frills. I almost hate to draw a Bad Religion comparison ...

Back to point. The bracing riff on "So. Bay," followed by the quiet vocal interlude, features classic Pixies dynamics. I imagine that type of writing came easy to Mr. Black, but that he resisted it, as it sounded like his former band.

A Breeders song that sound much like the Pixies -- "No Aloha." Mr. Black should have received royalties on that one. Also "New Year" and "Seether" (wait, that's another band, heh-heh.) Actually, that sound might have been a result of the Santiago-Francis-Murphy collaboration, so who knows who owns it. But it *is* distinctive.

To the Deals' credit, the "Title TK" album/tour wasn't bad at all. I had fun at the Minneapolis show. But I *dig* the Catholics live shows. I find it almost funny that the Minneapolis Pixies show sold out in three minutes or whatever. I paid a total of $25 to attend two Catholics shows last year(Milwaukee, Minneapolis) and they were killer, and they weren't capacity. Strange what a name will do.

Wandering off topic. Thanks for the indulgence.

Yeah. Everyone knows that Black Francis pulled a Syd Barrett and dissappeared off the face of the Earth. ALTHOUGH ... I hear he's poised for a comeback.

I heard he was taken by a Manta Ray.

The Marsist

King & Queen of Siam

Tossed (except for the horns)

Los Angeles

Pong/Thalassocracy

Hostess with the Mostest

those are off the top of my head...
whoreatthedoor Posted - 03/22/2004 : 02:16:15
Tossed (Instrumental Version) included in Bossanova. Well, it has some instruments that Pixies probably couldn't play.

most of the self titled i could hear as pixies songs, ditto for about half of TOTY

Bullet, Massif Centrale, The Marsisist and A Dab'll Do Ya. And yes, Blarg007 you have to use your imagination a tiny bit. These sound exactly like Pixies songs as covered by The Catholics. The dynamics in the songs themselves are there. Hmph!
blarg007 Posted - 03/10/2004 : 21:28:48
this is butt silly.
-i tried to imagine any song up above as a pixies song
and the problem is that every dynamic except FB's voice and strumming is missing IE: no resemblance to a pixies song at all.
joey s. may play on one or two.
another problem i have with this is that FB's sound evolves with each year -he could easily
be found to be the hardest working man in the rock business and his product reflects the changes.
each year brings a not necessarily better asthetic
but most definitely a new sound to the table and that is the way he seems to like it and it's cool.
what got me going was the mention of massif central -that sounds ridiculously un-pixies like
and as far as my own personal shit goes i think
it has a really silly vibe masked with a seemingly
powerful tone.
in short i think it is a well executed piece with
a powerful sound but the 'don't run away have some wine' stuff really makes me wonder what the hell
he's about here -honestly i haven't dissected the song lyrically and maybe i shouldn't but it just seems like a song of gusto and attitude masking
a shallow thought.
-i will always be glad to weed out the weak ones
in the future and usually wouldn't complain as i
also usually like songs like that more as time goes on.
-but it ain't no pixies sound thats for sure.

now is the time

I don't really think this whole album sounds like the Pixies, just Men in Black and the title track, Cult of Ray especially!

Thalosocrassy always reminded me the most of the Pixies, manily because of the scream at the end of the chorus. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

"Everything Is New"- To me, this could have been written around the time of 'Bossanova'. I'd even bet that's Joey on lead...

I think Massif Centrale would not sound out of place on Trompe, but equally there are times I listen to it and think of TOTY.

Valley of Our Hope kinda sounds like Build High; Bullet is the best song that the Pixies never cut - and I seriously hope they decide to play the latter song on their tour.

"The Adventure and the Resolution" and "The Marsist".
And "I Want Rock and Roll" is quite 'Rock Music'-esque, IMO.

Well, "Velvety" and "Brackish Boy" both were Pixies songs, sort of. I don't know whether anyone hearing the solo versions would think they recorded with the Pixies, though.
