Stupid Post, but anyhow.

The amount of Frank posts always trumped the Pixies posts on this board, so I was surprised to see the Pixies catchin' up so fast. Must be a lot of Pixies fans new to da board.

I think there are some rational reasons for it. For one thing, it can be fun to like a semi-obscure artist. It's like knowing about a hidden treasure. Concerts are usually not very crowded, and there's sometimes a sense of community among the fanbase. There's also the issue of people who get into something just because it's popular, or who insist they're fans of an artist when they really only know one or two big hit songs. Let's say Frank manages to put out a solo song that ends up being really popular, and people come to his concerts just to hear that one song, and have no interest in the rest of his material. Wouldn't that be kind of annoying?

That said, the Pixies reunion winning new fans of Frank's solo/Catholics work would definitely be cool. Is it all that likely, though? Are music journals that mention the Pixies making a point of promoting Frank's solo albums, or are they just going with the typical "After the Pixies split up, Frank put out some mediocre solo albums" kind of thing?

I'd never snub or look down upon any 'newbie' to the world of FB. I'd be happy they've found the light like me.
But I would ask "Where've you been for the last 10 years? You've missed so much"

Back to the Quarry Men, I think Paul and John had similar influences, so the Beatle sound may still have been there with just the one.
But anyway, that is debatable because we'll never know. If he exists, I thank God John and Paul found each other. Destiny.
I thank him more for Frank though.

Amen...

And I think to shed some light on what what I was then a 18 year old Pixies fan at the time of Frank's first solo album... there was emotional baggage that made the switch to FB from the Pixies so hard... like the few Pixies fans...all non-boston... that I knew prior to joining this forum... we discovered them in the 88-89 time frame on 120 Min...we fell in love and we were like where have you been all our lives.. and then with the break up and solo album...then to extend the love analogy.. we were just like "I am not ready to "just be friends" yet.. you dumped me as a fan when you broke up with the Pixies... now it's like 15 years later... we've both grown up...gone our separate ways... and now the fans are saying now we can "just be friends" and I can listen and love your solo work and think it's fantastic... where before it just pissed me off b/c it reminded me of the "break up"... I think sometimes when you are that young you have such a strong emotional connection musically to music that sometimes it clouds your judgement to how good the music really is... in my case not appriciating the FB solo stuff... not to mention... I thought his stuff was ahead of its time and took awhile for me to catch up to... anyway... that's my perspective... for what it's worth.

So now.. with the old wounds healed... I'm like what took me so long to come around... but I am imdebted to this tour for letting me discover/rediscover FB solo...which now makes my musical live complete.

I know what you mean, but after the Beatles we had both Paul and John (no offence Ringo/George). Take your pick of the sound you like. I was never a Wings fan, more of a Lennon man myself. (I know we got Kim aswell but...read on)

Pixies were so great because of the Fab four(Black/Kim/Joe/Dave), but lose the Black I thinks you lose the Pixies. Do you agree he was the key?
Beatles would still have a similar sound with or without Paul or John, just not some of the songs. Where the fuck would the Pixies be without one Charles Thompson?

I am. Well happy.

Hmmm....yes, Black was the Pixies key. I am not contesting that. But the Beatles without Lennon or McCartney sounding similar? That I can't really agree with.

But to be fair, what I meant with my original post was that a lot of original Pixies fans are not Frank Black fans. And a lot of Frank Black original fans are not Pixies fans. And that's fine. I feel we agree on that.

But a lot of Frank Black fans have become Pixie fans, and vice-versa. Now, would it be fair to discredit these 'newbie' Pixies fans if/when Frank gets back with the Catholics (or even solo) they jump on the Frank Black bandwagon? By the way, I'm not saying this is your view, but that fact seems to be the popular feeling in this FB vs. PIXIES debate.

I think Frank is making a spectacular self-promotion move by playing with the Pixies. It's going to really open his solo market up when he gets back around to doing solo stuff again...and I'm pretty damn sure there's gonna be a LOT more pairs of ears drinking up his music...and how can anything be negative about that?

Some may object and feel he won't deserve a new legion because these 'newbies' aren't original fans. It's a strange madness that overtakes every entertainment cult, and there's no rational explanation for it, yet it exists. So it almosts seems that some people are damning him for reuniting the Pixies for no other reason then they are losing their personal icon to the encroachment of others. Mark the day when a new Catholics album emerges, and half the threads on this site will be devoted to the bashing and flaming of the new voices spoken by those who are just discovering Frank from the latest Pixies craze.

Now that I've totally veered from the original point, I will shift back to the quote:

but after the Beatles we had both Paul and John (no offence Ringo/George). Take your pick of the sound you like.

Take the pick of the sound you like. Yes. And some prefer the Orange/Yellow album and some do not. Cut and dry. But give the potentials ('newbiew', I like to say) an unbiased chance. After the Pixies craze dies down and Frank is on his own path again, I'm sure a lot of these kids will eat the new stuff up. Remember as well, the Pixies today are probably close to 100 times more popular and famous then they were in their original conception. So when Frank reinvents the Catholics, I'm sure the numbers will rise. And to those who are negative about that fact, you're just silly.

FBC, please don't feel like I'm attacking you...it's not my intention. I just have a lot on my mind about all this stuff when it comes to the Pixies/Frank Black Contest. And I rant a lot, too!

I just feel not only are we as fans of the Charles Thompson world blessed to have him around to entertain us in any incarnation, but so are the ones just discovering his gospel.

If I can think of anything more I'll post. For now, I'm feeling like I'm hogging.

So if this is surprising to FB fans who have come around only recently, get used to it. The Pixies fans are alive!

These dormant fans should have been hitting this fan site. I find it hard to believe any Pixies fan could not have been turned on by the Orange...er, Yellow album after the death of the Pixies. The first tunes Los Angeles. Frank made it so easy for us.

I have been a Frank Black/Pixies fan for many years (since 1992). I have lurked around this board for a long time, but only recently joined due to the Pixies reunion. I own all the Pixies material, as well as all the FB/Catholics albums. Personally, my favorite FB songs were always those that were most like Pixies songs, and although I love his solo work this Pixies reunion has got me fired up.

I know many people (my wife, for one) who loved the pixies but never got into FB solo stuff, and especially the most recent Catholics material. Just look at it this way: this is like a sci-fi movie where there are legions of sleeping Pixies fans... the word has been spoken and now these dormant fans are awakening, ready to take over the world! PIXIE fan new to da board. have been checking out the forum for a while, mainly for FB&TC info, but also to see what fans had to say about shows that they had recently seen, new music, whatever. reunion brought me in.
half my life i have loved FRANK'S music. for me the good old days are pre-CATHOLICS. not that i do not love FB&TC, but it is just relative to when this all started for each individual. i am lucky(old) enough to have seen the pixies. at the time of the split i felt all was lost then FB kicked out two wonderful solo albums. it seems that the more things change....
charles is better than the PIXIES, he is better than FB, he is better than FB&TC, that is why i know he can please everybody. and if not, whatever. he is pleasing me. he just likes to wander a bit.

I actually hope he DOESN'T buy a real recording studio. I love the fact that he's mobile. I love the sound that they've gotten off of the last three albums. They're unique. And I got what you meant by the good old days. But they were touring this fall, and that didn't seem to fit the "old" demographic to me. But very recently, yes, things have been PIXIES-PIXIES-PIXIES!!! I'm sure everything will work out great. And I'd love to see him do the Pixies for a while. So long as he does the Catholics, too. But, like I've said, you can't please everybody.

I meant that the Catholics are the good old days. But the cashing in is a good thing if that's what is happening. Maybe Frank can buy a real recording studio and other new stuff. I hope it works out well for him.

Yes, I agree. I didn't mean this to be a "oh Pixies are reuniting, I want my Catholics!" type post. I was just surprised that this forum now has just as many Pixies posts as FBC.

While I'd love to see the Catholics again, you also have a LOT of fans who have been jonesing for a Pixies tour and a return to the good old OLD days. It'd be great if Frank could balance doing both Pixies and Catholics performances and keep things going. And from all the signs I've picked up on, he really seems to be picking up the pace with everything. I know John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants (who is, of course, a good friend of Frank's) has always been pulling off multiple musical endeavours, such as TMBG, Mono Puff, directing music videos (like Los Angeles), and being in off-Broadway musicals. Frank seems to be heading in that direction as far as busyness goes. And although he's not going to be able to please everybody, in fact, it's not his job to please everybody, he's sure giving it his best. You know what I mean? I'm amazed by the whole reunion, and as a hardcore fan of both the Pixies AND the Catholics I'm glad he's doing what he wants to and I look forward to seeing both groups playing. And besides, I think that with all the tours and shows and albums the Frank and the Catholics have done in the last six years or so (which seems to have never stopped) they should be given a little break to catch their breath, sit back and relax. They've earned it. Haven't they?
