This Saturday, I watched (shame on me) a french tv program about crap music bands called Fan De (Fan of)where they talk about boys band, Justin & Britney, Ricky Martin, and french equivalent.

The funny thing is that they often use cool music as background sound to illustrate their documentary (the end of J-Lo+Ben Affleck...), and I had the surprise too hear first Where is my mind (for the come Back of Djérald ex french boys band member), and after You Ain't Me on a documentary about Kyo, a lame french rock band.
I believe the guy doing this has a lot of humour.

Does this happen elsewhere?

I bet, with the reunion and all, that we're gonna see some car ad with 'Monkey' or 'Your Man' in it, ala that car ad with the Velvet's 'Venus In Furs'....it's this whole revival thing!

Considering that my eyes are still in their sockets (and not clawed out by my own hands), I would have to say NO!

U-Mass was used as background for some shitty charts show the otheer day. That said, all teevee in Spain is shitty. Not that the rest of the world is far behind, just here it seems shitty in a masterful kindof way.

I've seen a couple of science-y programs on the Beeb using 'U-Mass'. Key line: "Its educational..."

I heard a good chunk of Dig For Fire on an MTV Sports show sometime back in '94. It seems pretty unimportant, but at the time it was pretty off the wall to me and I've remembered it ever since.

Oh yeah, one time on BBC they had 'Tossed' playing as background music on 'Match Of The Day' or something. And the 'Jackass' car-race-around-Europe-thing featured a snatch of 'Ilse De Enchanta'. Did I say 'snatch'? Freudian slip....

They also used "Panic" from the Smiths in an episode of Jackass...

Yeah, on Jackass, they played "Broken Face" over a video of one of the guys dressed up in a full body cast getting pushed down the street by doctors, and the strectcher would always fall over, or he'd run into a curb and fall off in front of people on the street. Pretty funny stuff.

There was this programme...im not sure if its still going as i havent been in on a saturday afternoon for a while...on BBC1 about football (soccer to my friends over the sea) called football focus, and i think it was a few years ago but the theme music to the programme was the intro from "Letter to Memphis". It's a pretty random one! Also, I remember watching a football game on Sky sports, think it was England vs someone, cant remember who...but they were doing a caption profile type thing of Emile Heskey, showing what goals hed scored etc...and the music in the background was "Here Comes Your Man". Also the Pixies music has been on Jackass, cant remember what song. And...finally...a programme set in Greenock (just outside Glasgow) had Velvety by FB in it...though i cant for the life of me remember the name of the programme!

Here in Holland we have "Eigen Huis en Tuin" ("own home and garden") which is a very polular (primetime saturday afternoon) DIY and gardening program.

Once I heard Abstract Plain as background music when the showed a re-decorated house (they repeated the part: "I wanna live in an abstract house").

I don't consider football to be "stupid", though it is a strange place to hear a Pixies song. Before this year's Super Bowl, they had a montage of interviews with players. During one player sound bite, the begining of "Bone Machine" started up. It was actually pretty awesome. It was a very short clip, it didn't even get to mentioning Carol, but it was cool.

I've heard Pixies stuff as background music on MTV programmes in the past.

MTV does shit like that a lot. In their MTV movies or in the backgrounds of award shows and in news shows they will play Archers of Loaf and obscure Radiohead tracks, Alkaline Trio and what not.
