Today's random song of the day is End of Miles.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
At the end of miles
You stare out at the ocean
Mountains at your back you think you''ve tamed

At the end of miles you hope
You’ll soon be back in motion
But you''re never going back from where you came

A little peace at last
Yes I thought that I would stay just for a while
Now a shadow cast
Is all what''s left of this wanderer''s profile

But still I have survived
And I know I have arrived
Here at the end of miles

I lost it all back east
I sold my El Dorado
A stranger helped when I was thirstiest

For some the end of miles
Is Denver Colorado
But something always kept me moving west

I''m lately out of reach
In towns along the California shore
I''m leathery and bleached
I''m lost and I am lonesome to the core

I''ve got nowhere left to go
But I''m satisfied to know
There’ll be miles never more

Great, great song - finished 5th out of 157 in the last Aussie FB countdown...at first yeh i thought it was a poor man's SFDD - but i much prefer it now

3rd Annual Australian Frank Black Countdown August 2003 - all involved parties rank EVERY released FB song from FB self/titled to the present - average ranks are calculated - beer (or suitable substitute) is added (mostly in drinking-game form - ie. rate a song well below its average and you drink a punishing amount), then sit back and enjoy a day of frank black....the only problem is quite often memory of the top songs is somewhat limited the next day

End of miles?
Isn't that the song that eveybody seems to like, but never has been tabbed out?
(is that proper English?)

Floop, I thought it was you who called End Of Miles a bad St Francis copy. Who was it then?

Nimrod: yeah, apparently it's been played live in Bristol.

Does anyone know if a full-band version of this has ever been played live? I know it's been played acoustic. I got to see it acoustic.

frank at his most poignant..

this song strikes a personal chord with me since i went through a tough break up while living on the East Coast this year, and got into a gnarley car accident.. though it wasn't an El Dorado. nor did i sell it.

nor did a stranger help me when i was thursty.. but i did drink a lot of beers there.
tonvv Posted - 02/17/2004 : 12:48:00
I agree with Nimrod; the songs are similar (they "feel" the same). But where St. Francis is a great song, End of Miles is even better.

But.... as with a lot of song it's difficult for me to understand where the song really is about (I speak English but it is not my native language, so translating a sentense is something completely different than understanding it's poetic intentions).

Is it about being "on the move" (restlessly)?

Well, nimrod, just like St.Francis this song should be played live
it's one of the greatest songs FB has to offer

Great song. I like it better than St. Francis, which many people including me think is very similar. Frank has said this is his favorite off the album before. I guess it's pretty obvious what the song's about.

I don't know if it has already been discussed, but the version of End of Miles on the tribute album is...mmmmm...original....

End of Miles, YES! But, I agree with vilainde and benji, California Bound is the best on BLD. Beautiful stuff....

End of Miles is good. How about Southbound Bevy? Very underrated songwriting and arrangement.

Heh, Adnan, that's what I always think of.

My favorite on BLD, really a beautiful, beautiful song. BTW, the line about the stranger and being thirsty, doesn't that remind you of Ben Hur?

One of the best. A great song to listen to while driving up the 101 on the Eel River on your way to Humboldt.

awesome song, not my favorite on BLD, but that isnt a criticism since BLD is such a solid and great album (ip put my favs in order as IWRAFY, cold heart of stone, california bound, jane, how you went so far). but this song grows on you, it just keeps picking up momentum, and the lyrics are awesome, i love the end "i got nowhere left to go" and "for some . . . denver colorado"

Oh yes - I remember reading a post about this sampler. Hope they're still selling it. Thanks anyway.

Franks voice gets good and deep on the "from where you came" part, which is always a good thing. There's good pedal steel and lead guitar interplay on this one, too. I'm big into it.

Great song. I'd love to hear an acoustic version of it.

i agree with denis after having a think about it.
california bound is better, but not by much, and nothing is better than california bound.

I'm not sure it's the best song from BLD, California Bound is better, but it sure is a great song.

This song is amazing (and somehow there are people who dislike it). Without a doubt in the top 10 FB songs of all time and certainly the best thing on BLD (which is saying a lot).

This song was a creeper. Then again so was most of BLD. I'd venture to say that it's one of my favorites off the album now...

I like the lyrical atmosphere of the song... having nowhere left to go

California as the end of Western civilization as we know it
benji Posted - 02/13/2004 : 05:30:29
one of my favorites off BLD...

wish i had heard it live....
