Posted - 11/21/2003 : 05:22:52 Today's Song of the Day is Six-Sixty-Six.
What do you think of it?
live from 5.5.2002 knitting factory, l.a. thanks to donnie, http://www.superabound.altervista.org (lower left of page)
lyrics
In the midst of the war He offered us peace And he came like a lover From out of the east With the face of an angel and the heart of a beast His intentions were six-sixty-six
He walked up to the temple With gold in his hands And he bought off the priests And propositioned the land And the world was his harlot And laid in the sand While the band played six-sixty-six
We served at his table And slept on the floor But he starved us and beat us And nailed us to the door Well, I''m ready to die I can''t take any more And I''m sick of his lies and his tricks
He told us he loved us But that was a lie There was blood in his pockets And death in his eyes Well, my number is up And I''m willing to die If the band will play six If the band will play six-sixty If the band will play six-sixty-six

Posted - 11/27/2003 : 19:31:52 Yeah, I much prefer the album version to the slow noise live version, and that laughter at the end totally clinches it for me. It's just plain more fun.

Posted - 11/21/2003 : 16:59:42 There are so many of you that don't like this song. I get a kick out of it. Frank's continually strumming and the lyrics. To me, its a fun song. Must be if Frank plays it in concert so much. |

Posted - 11/21/2003 : 15:23:49 The theme of the song is based on the book of Revelation, and Larry Norman pretty much is the daddy of Christian Contmeporary Music (or CCM, as I like to call it). He was, I think, virtually the first to do anything like this. Plus he's an influence on The Man, which is good.
Yeah! Go God Boy!

Strange coincidence: Norman's label is Solid Rock, and the song following 666 on Frank's album is... Solid Gold.

By the way, a good song about American Indian genocide to cover would be Neil Young's "Cortez the killer".
Great suggestion - I would love to hear them cover that song. Slint did a really excellent (though a bit rough) live cover of that.
Never heard the Slint cover, but you should check out the live cover of Cortez by Built To Spill. They're an incredible band and they do an incredible extended jam on this song on their "Live" album.
BTW, if you've never heard of Built To Spill, check out "Perfect From Now On", "Keep it Like a Secret", or "There's Nothing Wrong With Love" you won't be disappointed. |

Posted - 11/21/2003 : 11:15:13 I guess I was wrong about the genocide tip. I didn't know that the original composer was a (perhaps the) Christian artist. The "Come on pilgrim" guy, right?! Shoulda known. I guess I was looking too deeply into the Satan as a metaphor for whitey thing.
So, this runnin' off the Injuns theme is a relatively new phenomenon for Frank then. |

Posted - 11/21/2003 : 10:57:58 speaking of hebephrenics: this is for you apl and anyone else who can muster the strength to get a book and read it -find a copy of philip k. dicks' book 'clans of the alphane moon' -it's a very well done scifi scenario in which after an outer solar system war has ended a small planet that was used as a mental breakdown/medical location is left behind and forgotten. clans develop as a society base for the people living there ...like neighborhoods based on mental characteristics as opposed to race or culture, hebephrnics, claustrophobics etc. -it's hilarious and very human compared to the average scifi deal, but then that's what most of Dicks' fiction was after all. (boy, talk about de-railing a thread...)

so, doesn't this song talk about the devil coming like a lover from the east and all that goes with the satan mythology:... 'death in his eyes ' etc...'beast'-'666' i'm not gettin' 'the conquistador guilt trip' thing on this one, it is a cover of a song apparrantly about some people having to put up with ol' mr. satan himself -it just seems a stretch to consider this song one of those -i always picture it coming from the perspective of a group of unlucky fellers in a small town who operate a saloon with a bed and breakfast or some such locale who unfortunately have to deal with Mr.S as a guest... imagine winning a cosmic lottery of some kind and getting the grand prize of having satan be your slave for a year... 'SATAN!, GET ME A BEER!!....

Posted - 11/21/2003 : 10:12:46 During the DITS tour, I saw Franz Schwarz live in Paris and I think he was pretty drunk....however, I didn't like 666 very much until then, for the live version was really great and the Man drew a 6 on his forehead while staring at the audience with his bright blue eyes, in a really weird and scary way, as if he saw the Antechrist or something....
By the way, a good song about American Indian genocide to cover would be Neil Young's "Cortez the killer".

I categorically laugh and/or deny all charges. Except for changing the colour of your text. I definitely did that.

Posted - 11/21/2003 : 09:57:47 i think the song of the day is chosen from all officially released tracks.
i don't think this song is about genocide, but rather christianity.
i also love the original version of this song.
thanks to the superabound site for providing a live version to check out.

Posted - 11/21/2003 : 08:39:48 mmm, I think it's great Frank tells us about the Indian genocide, it's something we shouldn't forget.
As for Larry Norman, it's a gospel singer/songwriter I enjoy his own version of 666, I will even go this far that his version is better. But it all depends on the mood you're in.
I believe Frank is highly influenced by this Lary Norman, he said in interviews that he watched shows of him when going to christian summercamp. And when asked what their influences are on that pre-COP radioshow, Frank says Larry Norman is his influence. Kim says Oliver and Sound of Music, David says Mozart and Nancy Sinatra, I think Joey was the only one with a rock influence, Velvet Underground or something like that.

I don't mind the album version of this, but sweet maria I cannot stand the live version. There's one thing that I cannot stand... and, in the words of Mr. Disanto, that is this song.
