For my TMBG podcast I want to highlight a guitar solo by Lyle in Frank Black's work, since Lyle plays guitar on TMBG's cover of "New York City". As usual I am trying to get our listeners into Frank Black!

Thanks for the explaination! As you probably realize, I'm not a guitar player but just tried to formulate the effect this solo has on me :)

I don't really hear any reverb, what he's doing is playing the two note riff and first using a pick and then only doing it with his left hand (and relying on the amp sustain to keep it going) while his pick hand is just hanging out or combing his hair or doing something cool or something. Then he keeps going like a normal guitar solo with a pick again. But yes, to your point, it's an innovative way to do a solo and has tons of personality and unexpected technique, and is probably visually cool to watch too.

I think it is a perfect example of how he is master of both notes/melody and tone/technical effect.
Here he starts this little solo, stops, and let it ring on through the reverb. Then, with a slight delay, he restarts the solo (at the exactly right moment!) over the still echoing previous solo. The effect is that it sounds like a second guitar is bypassing/overtaking the first guitar, and thus elevates everything.
So simple, but absolutely brilliant.

Ah yes, what Beavis and Butt-Head do. Great point! In my podcast I'll say it's unanimous that Vanishing Spies is THE solo to play.

I really like his lead parts in Steak and Sabre (particularly the choruses). Marsist is a good choice. I'd add Ole Mullholland after watching TOTY live. |

Holy mama. I have never seen that video and I spent many days researching every time TMBG and Frank were in the same room because of a few podcasts we've recorded. Amazing! I wish the entire thing was up.
NYC is fine, it's kind of cute, I got sick of it kind of quickly, but really I'm just not too into them putting covers on their albums, because I'm in it for their songwriting. Obviously my podcast is going to dive deep into what the song means to Flans and to the fans and etc, but I have skipped that track on the album many, many times.
ANY MORE LYLE SOLOS WE SHOULD PLAY??? |

It's quite straightforward for TMBG but I still enjoy it. However, since delving (slightly) deeper into their back catalogue after the concert last November that song is way down the pecking order now. The likes of Don't Let's Start, Cabbagetown, Where Your Eyes Don't Go, The Cap'm, Nanobots and She's An Angel have been in and out of my head. Still have a few more albums to explore.
Have gone down a TMBG / Frank rabbit hole now - I had never seen this footage before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMY2Og1icc8&ab_channel=PJalt (Frank sort of filling in for John Linnell for some radio recording).
Found a comment on another video claiming Frank came out to add some extra guitar crunch to Ana Ng during the tour he was opening for TMBG. What times they were. |

I was leaning towards Vanishing Spies!
It's like in my bottom least favorite ever TMBG songs so I'm...kind of trying to find other stuff to say about it! |

I didn't realise that was Lyle! That's been one of my favourite TMBG songs for years.
Guess you could choose almost anything off TOTY but solo in The Vanishing Spies is amazing. |
