Posted - 08/13/2024 : 08:15:14 I've been going through Demon Record's excellent Frank Black/Frank Black & The Catholics reissues series recently, and thought it would be fun to try and sequence a 2LP or CD-length "Best of Frank Black & the Catholics."
Here's my first try. I've aimed to keep each side at 20 minutes or under, to give a sense of the variety/different flavours of the band, to sequence with side openers/closers in mind, to include a few choice non-album tracks, and to keep each of the albums relatively well-represented (although this isn't always possible).
Side A:
All My Ghosts (3:32) Living On Soul (2:44) I Gotta Move (3:37) Dog Gone (3:00) Western Star (3:12) So. Bay (5:05)
Side B
I Switched You (5:21) Billy Radcliff (2:24) Angst (1:31) Pan American Highway (4:20) Bullet (3:53) Dog In the Sand (3:45)
Side C
St. Francis Dam Disaster (5:02) Llano del Rio (4:14) (alternatively: Robert Onion 4:01) Cold Heart of Stone (3:19) End of Miles (3:49) I Will Run After You (3:58)
Side D
San Antonio, TX (3:43)
Out of State (2:29) His Kingly Cave (4:44) Nadine (3:05) Don't Clip Your Wings (1:53) Massif Central (4:52) Manitoba (4:33)
Songs that are next in line but didn't make it because of space: I've Seen Your Picture, Coastline, Everything is New, Stake & Sabre, Whiskey in Your Shoes, Whispering Weeds.
Songs I would consider taking off to make room, but think serve a purpose of showing their dexterity: I Gotta Move, So. Bay, Angst, Llano del Rio
Songs that were on the Best of 93-03 that I did not not include, but likely would be included in an official release: Bad Harmony, Robert Onion, Hermaphroditos, California Bound, Velvety
What do people think? How would you compose it? |

Posted - 09/28/2024 : 10:18:46 Some adjustments - mostly taking out two relatively long songs (So. Bay and His Kingly Cave) to provide more breathing room for some relatively shorter songs (Robert Onion, Valentine and Garuda, Velvety, and Coastline), while allowing a couple of the sides to get to 21-22 minutes in length:
Side A:
All My Ghosts (3:32) Living On Soul (2:44) I Gotta Move (3:37) Dog Gone (3:00) Western Star (3:12) I Switched You (5:21)
Side B
Billy Radcliffe (2:24) Angst (1:31) Pan American Highway (4:20) Bullet (3:53) Robert Onion (4:01) Dog In the Sand (3:45)
Side C
St. Francis Dam Disaster (5:02) Llano del Rio (4:14) Cold Heart of Stone (3:19) End of Miles (3:49) Valentine and Garuda (3:13) I Will Run After You (3:58)
Side D
San Antonio, TX (3:43) Velvety (2:28) Nadine (3:05) Don't Clip Your Wings (1:53) Massif Central (4:52) Coastline (1:57) Manitoba (4:33)

Posted - 09/03/2024 : 11:13:00 Openers? Closers? Order? Did the uninspired alphabetic reshuffle. All My Ghosts for sure is a good opener. Took off Announcement because it is not FB&TC period, and replaced it with Coastline.

If Announcement counts then that would either be my opener or my closer
Although it's hard to resist opening with So. Bay |

Posted - 08/31/2024 : 08:51:22 Can easily make a comprehensive playlist that would last for hours but thought I'd whittle it down to an albums worth - 14 songs of my favourites.
St Francis Dam Disaster Western Star All My Ghosts Chip Away Boy I Switched You I've Seen Your Picture Some Things (I Can't Get Used To) The Swimmer Whiskey In Your Shoes Robert Onion I Will Run After You Pan American Highway Stupid Me Dog In The Sand |

Posted - 08/13/2024 : 11:46:17 Thanks! I hadn't made it to Devil's Workshop and had mixed up Out of State and His Kingly Cave - I've made the replacement, but I wish I could find room for "Out of State" or "Whiskey in Your Shoes" to better represent Devil's Workshop. I think the problem might be an overloading of FB&TC and Pistolero on sides A and B that creates a scarcity of space for BLD and DW. Perhaps getting rid of one of "I Gotta Move", "So. Bay" or "I Switched You" could help rebalance. Having both "So. Bay" and "I Switched You" might be overkill, but I like the sequencing as side closers and openers. |

Posted - 08/13/2024 : 10:35:43 Initial thoughts are...this is tough!
It's a great list of songs you have there and though I probably wouldn't purposely take any of them out, I would have to make room for Chip Away Boy, Robert Onion, Some Things, The Swimmer, Stupid Me and I've Seen Your Picture.
I'd have to think about it more and in what order, though yours is pretty great. It's interesting now looking back at this body of work over what a 5 or 6 year period, that was a great era. |
