Posted - 01/25/2018 : 10:25:54 Going back to the early 90s when I first heard SR, then COP, there were times I thought the lead singer of the Pixies was female.
I kind of miss when Black's voice could do that.

Posted - 02/18/2018 : 22:01:04 Non Frank Black related but on topic. Just listened to the new Brian Power album, bit of soul house. Not usually my bag but if it's quality then I can be partial. This is funkeh.

Anyway, as I was listening to it I thought I'd look up who the soul diva was who was singing the chorus/backing vocals. Googled Brian Power, Ronnie Herel and Ali Tennant. All dudes. |

Posted - 02/11/2018 : 12:23:01 I too used to think some of his parts were Kim singing
My wife couldn't believe it when she first saw him live...she didn't know what he looked like and assumed he was a little skinny dude "like Morrissey"! |

Posted - 01/31/2018 : 07:24:55 I meant I miss when he could fool me into thinking his part was Kim singing or some other random girl that wandered into the studio.
I don't think he can achieve that level anymore (observation not criticism). |

Thought you meant he couldn't do it anymore.

Ever listened to What Goes Boom (bridge, especially), Jaime Bravo...?
Ok, I guess you did. ;-)
But if you're talking about the kind of singing voice he uses on songs like Trompe Le Monde (the song) for example, well, I think he does a pretty decent job on a few number on Indie Cindy (also Magdalena) with this kind of voice. It's pretty close.

I'm not saying he doesn't still do great falsetto. I'm saying there are times in 1.0 when I can't tell who is singing, Black Francis or Mrs. John Murphy. |

Posted - 01/27/2018 : 04:34:00 Yes, his voice changed more than most singers I know, except Bob Dylan.
But he's still got a fantastic falsetto. https://youtu.be/X24YbUt4CL8?t=1m2s |

Posted - 01/26/2018 : 08:17:32 He doesn't do the high pitched singing as good as the old days, that's for sure. |

Posted - 01/26/2018 : 05:03:04 Yeah, maybe that's what I mean.
That's another reason why 2.0 is so different. I love his voice both ways, but the 1.0 was unique.
The day the orange album came out in 93 I bought it, and when I heard his grizzly "I met a man," I thought to myself, "Okay, he's telling us that Pixies are over and he's different now. It was cool.
