Maybe it's stupid, but I think Black Francis should realease his next album with a pre-order system without any song leaked, NOTHING even for the press, so it wont be leaked too fast and much more people will buy it, and most of all it would give more aura to that record, and some healthy waiting like in the good old days. The idea would be to pre-sell the record like 2 monthes before its release, and it's obvious that ALL the fans will pre-buy it, not just the hardcore fans or juste the ones that STILL buy records. I dont know, it seems obvious and maybe they already tryed it, but i wanted to share it anyway... Let's take my case: i used to buy EVERYTHING he was doing, but now I just buy it when i like it at once (the golem for example) and maybe i dont take enough time to listen some of his new stuff like i used to do (like many people i didnt like the orange album -what is that synth britpop sound?- or even teenager of the year -c'mon is that dire straits or what?- and obviously i love them now, juste like people didnt like the white album or trout mask replica when it was realeased).

There's no denying that the first two solo records are masterpieces. So much so that I had to cut class to go to Strawberries in Kenmore square to get TOTY when it came out and then spent the rest of the day unable to finish listening to the entire Cd because I kept starting the thing over by the time I got to Two Reelers. Talk about sphincter puckage...

I love the multi tracking production of these records. I also love the live to two track and most things in between since...

Never really liked that FM sound
Maybe BF needed to complete his "narrative arch" and wander through synth pop, pop opera, obese rock, raw vintage country and other unnecessary genres, before coming back to precious things. Some part of me wanted to love Yellow and ToTY, and I eventually liked them, but looking back at those efforts it really seems to me full of compromise. So few gems, like Los Angeles and Ten Percenter (and even those had horrible production sound compared to Pixies), or Thalassocracy and Freedom Rock, for so many Dire Staits sounding items... I'm gonna get trashed for confessing this, but I only got reconciled with BF with Honeycomb and its sensibility, and then Christmass and the pure genius of Dead Man's Curve, Radio Lizards, this version of Living on Soul, + experiments such as Rabbit and Victoria Reel, + Bluefinger and the subsequent "vocals only" tour.
Now I feel even he knows that he was subpar for more than a decade (though I understand people appreciating that era, I just can't find it as tasty as the ever-increasing quality I sensed from Pilgrim to Trompe). Last year, when preparing New Pixies demos, he wrote he needed to produce good songwriting because he was "overdue". I really like what I'm hearing now: Andro Queen, Greens and Blues, Classic Masher, Silver Snail, Indie Cindy all have awesome potential, a mellow substrate with weird hooks and a Pixies feel that does not seem stuck in the 90s while preserving the poetry and "instant classic" feeling of yore.

Why am I writing all this?...

I didnt want to bring the attention on it... but anyway i was 16 in 94 and when i heard calistan and also speedy marie it sounded very dire straits to me, i was more comfortable with songs like pong or pie in the sky, i didnt know what to think of that country rock vibe FB seemed to get in at that time, it sounded very FM to me (i dont think there is any trace of country rock before TOTY, even if there is a lot of folk punk, surf, etc...). Anyway i got to like it quickly...

a dedicated section of the forum would be nicer.

but even then all the other discussion would get diluted.

a dedicated forum is the right way. so i set it up.

Not sure, and never had thought of it this way, but maybe the beginning of Calistan reminded him Sultans of Swing at first or something? As the style differs a bit from the kind of stuff Pixies used to do. Anyway still a creepy comparison if you ask me.

Sometimes I wish I was a moderator here, so that I could ban everyone who mentions fucking dire straits on this site.

I don't think leaks are caused by fans buying records. These days leaks happen no matter what

I think the idea is a bit flawed. don't do any press? people need to know there is an album in order to buy it (or pre order it)

Catholics Box-Set should be up on the Bureau site NOW as a pre-order even if the street date is weeks/months away..

I have the key to #902
