Possibilities: (A) He really, really doesn't want to be famous, and this one song could have ruined that. (B) He didn't realize how good the song was, or how well it fit into FB&Cs? (C) He was talked-out of promoting the tune by an evil force, trying to prevent his good from being widely-distributed.
My bet is on (C).
