Show me the love for this song. Is it underloved?. It can sound quite ordinary on first listens.
I think the definative version is on you tube where he performs it live on his own circa 94 in london.
Deliveres what I think under the surface is a heart breaking performance,
The tone of that guitar...nice.
Fav Line: "And the lake sings, and the dogs don't"

And to leap from cliche to completely pedestrian...does anyone know who Adda Lee was, or may have been?

I guess we all know who our own, personal Adda Lee was.
i love how at the opening shot he's so far away. i wish the whole video was like that.

Posted - 03/25/2010 : 14:34:43 It really does not get much better than this; yet another great song.
How many reviews of songs on this site have had the word "love" in the first sentence? I know it is a fan site, but there is a lot more positive than negative, and with an artist this prolific it says a lot; someday people will realize the total genius of FB! His first two albums are getting more and more love, and the Catholics are slowly starting getting their just desserts.
I tend to think my tastes are eclectic, but I think FB is better than them all on a consistent basis. Right up there with Dylan, Prine and the Manhattan Transfer!
Them includes ______________.(fill in name here)
And like so many other songs I really love this one. I have about 50 number 1 songs for the man. It really is hard to choose. |

Posted - 03/24/2010 : 06:57:10 I used to love listening to this song on my Walkman in 1992, riding my mountain bike around the hills north of Laramie, Wyoming. That whole album is good solitary biking music. I assume it's good for skating, too.
And all of this for nuthin', after all my huffin' and puffin'. |

Posted - 03/24/2010 : 04:34:28 Took me years for this song to eventually click, cause I was so amazed by the greatness of Parry The Wind that I never paid attention to the following 3 songs. Then all of a sudden I realized that the little ditty that came right after that epic song was, well, simply stunning.
Plus, this song is so amazingly Bowiesque.
Fave part: the 10 seconds break between "And she made me a man for the world" and the coda. Totally insane.
Listening to the '93 Electric Ladyland version, there's a kickass slide guitar sound at 1'32" right before "And she whispered"... Brings shivers down my spine.

Posted - 03/24/2010 : 04:02:22 So much to love about this song, but first and foremost is the huge screaming solo at the beginning, classic FBF style of one song to start you out, then you calm down a bit into the 'other' song....
Some have disparaged this song to me for its white-reggage but I have always thought Frank Black handles that influence greatly, here and elsewhere. |

Posted - 03/14/2010 : 08:05:56 Loved this song right from the start thanks to its unpredictable chord progression...same type of thing happens in "Every time I go around here"... when transitioning from "round" to "here". Just when you think you might have a feel for the direction in which the song is going, you are taken off guard in the most splendid way by a chord out of the middle of nowhere.
