The "Fave post-Nashville song" thread made me want to create this one. I personnally dislike the 2 Nashville records, but I have to admit there are a couple of great songs in it. Some actually sound great and some which would sound great with another band. So, fave song from HC/FMRM?
My choice goes to The Real El Rey. And My Terrible Ways is ugly on the record but the live acoustic version was awesome.

I like the way the verse lyrics flow. I really dig the keys solo....no wait....where's the solo gone?!!

I think KISS MY RING is excellent (but I'm not Catholic)!

I don't think it's cheezy at all.

I think it's self-depriciating AND at the same time cynical. It's a mature punk song.
OLDMANOTY Posted - 06/12/2009 : 05:19:18
In no particular order...

Selkie Bride
My Life Is In Storage
Honeycomb
Another Velvet Nightmare
It's Just Not Your Moment
Fitzgerald
In The Time Of My Ruin
The End Of The Summer
Seven Days
If Your Poison Gets You
Fast Man
Kiss My Ring (am I the only one who likes this? It's a bit cheesy but it's got a great tune/structure imo)

Most of the rest of Honeycomb/FMRM bores the pants off me tbh.

I heart 'I Don't Live Here Anymore' as of yesterday. Isn't it great when you can relate to a song. Kind of sad but very very uplifting. To look back and smile must be a good thing, surely.

Fitzgerald and beeing from biloxi my terrible ways

'Seven Days', 'In The Time Of My Ruin' and 'Sad Man's Song' are all favourites of mine amongst many others.

On reflection FM/RM would probably have been better as just one long-ish album, but fans can do that themselves with CD burning and playlists so I'm still grateful for the double album.

For me, it's hearing the songs played live that brings them to life. The acoustic Barleycorn performed by FB and Billy Block on the radio; The Saskatoon vid of Raider Man Brian and Dean shared with us.

Let's see...
Seven Days grew a lot on me and might now be my favorite from this era.
Johnny Barleycorn of course is still a strong contender as well !

I love Fast Man Raider Man!

Johnny Barleycorn, In The Time of My Ruin, Dirty Old Town, I'm not dead I'm in PIttsburg, Sad Old world, Don't Cry That way and Fare Thee Well are some of the faves I can think of off the top of my head.

Well yeah, but not only. It's not just for saying Tiven sucks (I just bought a Tiven produced record last week (the Blackwell tribute)), it's that I regret that some great songs were recorded in a way that I dislike and that ruined it in my opinion, not only because of the production.

I just went back and read over the lyrics to "Go Find Your Saint", I never realized how startlingly autobiographical that song is.

Hall of the felled tree = W.O.W hall Oregon = live music venue

W.O.W = woodcutters of the world (i think, close anyway)

Another excellent FB obscure reference
soderstromk Posted - 05/12/2009 : 11:14:45
I see Go Find Your Saint as the synopsis of a story elaborated in You Can't Crucify Yourself and Kiss My Ring - Parts I,II and III. They seem to me to be about the same thing somehow.

I wonder what the "Hall of the Felled Tree" is?

You're kidding, right? You're not putting Dog Sleep in the same category as an epic like Sing For Joy. Right?

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

They serve different masters, but serve them exceptionally well.

It's Just Not Your Moment is a real gem.
Somewhere I got the impression the setting took place at a strip club.
Can anyone clarify this?

Honeycomb. Absolutely.
I could not find my honeycomb.

Selkie Bride is also a great one.
I hate picking and choosing. These threads are driving me crazy.

Man, a lot of you like shitty songs! Kidding! Sort of! Not really!

Denis - "The Real El Ray?" Really? Really?

"Sing for Joy" perhaps is mine. That or "Dog Sleep."

Hey all, don't ruin my thread!
It's not about writing that HC and FMRM are great, because they aren't. It's about writing that they have great songs, that were ruined by crappy production and boring instrumentation (as much as I like what these guys did 40 years ago).

Replace Dirty Old Town with Raiderman and replace Dog Sleep with Fitzgerald, and I think you just about have it, Soren.

I still don't get how Honeycomb isn't a fan favorite. I think it's the best thing he (or anyone) has done.

And I'm finally with you on Violet, Kathryn. I used to think it was too simple for him -- that it was just a plain love song from FB to his wife -- but if you think about "violet" literally as a flower and the singer as ... stay with me here ... the honeybee from the song Honeycomb, then it has more than one meaning.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

hc: selkie bride/sunday sunny mill valley groove day/honeycomb/atom in my heart/sing for joy

fm/rm: fast man/dirty old town/wanderlust/raiderman/dog sleep/in the time of my ruin/my terrible ways/fitzgerald

there are some other great songs on both of these albums, but those are definitely my faves. it would be hard to narrow it down from there.

Dog Sleep. For some reason when I go to put this song on Fast Man Raider Man is the last place I think of looking.

Got to love the lyrics of Atom in My Heart too.

Ooh this is hard!
Maybe Selkie Bride or Sing for Joy?

Contenders:
I Burn Today
Honeycomb
If Your Poison Gets You
Seven Days
Dog Sleep
In the Time of My Ruin
kathryn Posted - 05/08/2009 : 12:50:36
Fast Man has an elegant sadness.

Atom in My Heart -- wow!

And I continue to find a breathtaking beauty in the song Violet, though many here have mocked me for that. It's so sparse and honest.

Great concept, Denis.

I remember sitting in a basement listening to Fields of Marigold until I passed out.

Go Find Your Saint
Lone Child
Strange Goodbye
My Life is in Storage
Sing For Joy is an incredible live song
Johnny Barleycorn
In the Time of My Ruin
Fitzgerald
