If you were to recommend one of Franks, or Mr Francis', albums to a friend, who was a fan of the Pixies but hadn't heard anything of his solo stuff, which album would you choose to inspire your friend to get into his music?

I think I would choose Christmass.

For one it's a damn good live compilation of his music, and it is also I think the least "fillery" of his albums.

Whatever album you pic, I suggest locking him in the car and not stopping until A: He loves it or B: 5 album plays have passed. If B occurs and he does not love it, the he is not to be considered friend. Proceed to kick him onto the curb; preferably while the vehicle is still moving.

I bought the yellow album when it came out, without even being sure who "Frank Black" was. Naturally I already had all the Pixies albums and because the cover art was similar I assumed he had switched his name around. Glad I was right or that would have been $8 down the drain.

He said they're into the Pixies. Why a Pixies fan would want to skip the logical progression to the orange and yellow album, I don't understand.

If the point is to let the person wade in delicately, and have a gentle transition from Pixies to FB, you gotta go with the first solo album. It also happens to be a dynamite record, so you got that goin' for ya.

But I would advocate pushing your friend into the deep end, not wading in. I'd go with "Dog in the Sand" as the album most likely to hook this friend into taking the journey through the whole catalog. It's an accessible entry point AND it provides an idea of the progression of the sound over all these years, the best litmus test if you want to figure out whether the person should spend time getting into the whole discography.

But maybe "Christmass" serves the same purpose, pot, and maybe that's what you were getting at. I just consider "DITS" to be a better listen than "Christmass" and therefore better suited for the task. Just one man's opinion. Go forth and spread the Gospel, sure...

Yeah, I don't think the "real" fans are the ones who care about what's 'cool'.

I feel sorry for people who don't enjoy Bossanova or Trompe le Monde. Just reminds me of that tosser in the 'Gouge' documentary who says "if you're a REAL Pixies fan, it's not cool to like the last two albums".

Bluefinger probably. But Orange Yellow would make more sense.

Self titled. Maybe Teenager.

On first instinct I think I'd choose Bluefinger for someone who'd only heard the Pixies up to now and then just go from there.
