As he had imediatly quite a lot of success, I bet Black Francis doesnt really know the underground way of making music (or art in general). Of course there is a lot of DIY in the Catholics recordings and tours, and he's allways been totaly honest, but Frank will NEVER know what it is to stay totally obscure. That's not a critic but a fact, that helps me understanding a bit more his music in the past and today.
He is a bit like XTC's Andy Partridge, doing as much free things as he can, but having grown under the spotlights. This profile also makes me think to John Lennon, in another scale.

Heh. No kidding, that's all I've been doing And Ziggy yes on ageless. If they hadn't called themselves Pixies they could easily have gone with Cherubs.

Some great interviews from the early days. Aside from the lack of hair, FBF looks eerily ageless!

Frank will always have a decent fan base and be able to play whatever he wants.

I remember him saying something like that from Pixies days. "I'm a fan of rock music. That's why I do it. I'm a big fan. I'm a fanatic of rock n roll records."

I like Grotesque's idea here that being obscure allows you a creative freedom. If you're looking at getting published you instantly start tailoring your art into something saleable. It's an exciting time now that the internet's changing all that, cutting out the middle men.

Wow I got quoted.

Daisy's right. A post with ringing clarity, trobrianders. You're totally right about his muse not caring about how the music is received. She's a powerful muse, but she's not interested in feedback. And I like the comment about his making music from the perspective of a fan. I've never heard him say that.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

He's so willfull, like Lou Reed or Tom Waits, it doesn't seem to matter to his art. His muse doesn't seem to know or care if he is well known or not. And anyway doesn't he say that he makes his songs from the perspective of a fan rather than an artist? He can't make music as an obscure artist but he can make music as an obscure fan. We're all obscure fans.

As far as record sales goes no way he is underground. But as far as influencing underground music...
Grotesque Posted - 10/02/2007 : 12:16:22
I often speack to people in the underground american scene, at the level of Old Time Relijun or The Good Good, or like used to be Deerhoof before having more success, and to them Black Francis is like a reference but certainly someone who never got part of that underground scene. But that was another era. Now, being underground means really no money at all (like it used to be) but at least no record company neither to take the few money you have. They're juste very little labels, people puting money together to make records (like 1000 each time). This really cant be called business at any level!
