Thomas on someone replacing him (as singer of Pere Ubu):
"We talked about Frank Black. I mean, he ripped off my band, why wouldn't he just take over after I'm gone?" |

Posted - 12/04/2022 : 01:52:59 That's pretty amazing. Though I prefer their earlier stuff personally, they're quite legendary. How did the gig go? And how is Dave Thomas doing, I read he's had health issues. |

Posted - 11/21/2022 : 21:35:09 A new Pere Ubu album will be released in March. The first time I heard of them was on the "Black Is Beautiful" Frank Black bootleg. During the instrumental rendition of Freedom Rock, Frank would introduce his band. About Tony Maimone and EDF he would say things like: "He played with Captain Beefheart, Snakefinger, he played with Pere Ubu..." I was wondering at that time who was this band with its strange name. Last years I joined Pere Ubu on stage in Canterburry. Next Saturday, I should join them again in Paris (in their Moon Unit configuration). I sometimes can't believe I became the non-aligned French member of Pere Ubu. And I still hear the voice of Frank Black, nearly 30 years ahead, saying: "He played with Pere Ubu..."

Indeed!
In the beginning I was very sceptic with the Fontana Years records, especially Cloudland, but in the end, it is a complex, funny and coherent album. The Fontana records are the most experimental records they released. The kind of records you would like to hear from contemporary bands. We have the Technology is on "The Tenement Year". Père Ubu rules more than other cult bands. Records

Posted - 05/11/2015 : 00:55:17 The most recent thread about Pere Ubu is 8 years old. Oh well.
I'm a latecomer myself but each new record I get makes me love the band more. I recently bought Cloudland and Story of My Life and they're like the orange album's identical twins. I can't get tired of them.

Posted - 10/02/2007 : 10:01:09 He's kidding, well yeah, but David Thomas kidding is like a siamese cat playing with your hand. You never know how it's gonna end... maybe with some blood. Thomas is great, a true inspiration for Frank and so many other people. Check out Pere Ubu's latest effort "Why I hate women". It's one of their best albums. And that tittle... is he still kidding? You open the booklet and it says "THIS RECORD IS 100% IRONY FREE" Thomas is a bit of a rocking Lars Von Trier, half smart, half crazy. |

Posted - 10/02/2007 : 01:45:44 I vaguely remember Frank joking about the fact that he kept stealing musicians from Thomas (EDF, the Pale Boys) - that must have been around the time FrankBlackFrancis came out - so you certainly have a point.
