Anyone get a chance to view the Tight Black Rubber video on BlackFrancis.net? Any thoughts on the video or the song itself?

I like the video. Nothin' wrong with a little sexiness here and there.

I guess the song's about heroin, though.

I was a bit surprised to see that at first but it doesn't really bother me. I figure...if Violet's okay with it then it's fine. Besides, I think the video doesn't really show all that much. It's what's left to the imagination that I think disturbs some people.

Tim! I thought you had disappeared.

And I was creeped out, too. I don't really want to see a Frank Black sex tape.

(shivers as if chilled by a cold douche)

Yeah, me neither.

But then we could start a "Black Francis is the new Paris Hilton" thread!

Yeah, me neither.

I haven't been here in a while, probably because I haven't been that into the last two FB CDs. But the new one has me interested again...

Apparently, Frank addressed this thread at a show this week. This comes from the FB live section of the forum:

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

As for the song, I love it, but it sounds a lot like later day Captain Beefheart to me.

I like the video but it doesn't match the song so well. In my inconsequential opinion :)

It's a drug song.

Crossroads, off of Tom Waits' The Black Rider (Lyrics Burroughs)

Crossroads Now, George was a good straight boy to begin with, but there was bad blood
In him; someway he got into the magic bullets and that leads straight to
Devil's work, just like marijuana leads to heroin; you think yo ucan take
Them bullets or leave 'em, do you?
Just save a few for your bad days

Well, now, we all have those bad days when you can't shoot for shit.

The more of them magics you use, the more bad days you have without them
So it comes down finally to all your days being bad without the bullets
It's magics or nothing
Time to stop chippying around and kidding yourself,
Kid, you're hooked, heavy as lead

And that's where old George found himself
Out there at the crossroads
Molding the Devil's bullets
Now a man figures it's his bullets, so it will
Hit what he wants to hit
But it don't always work that way

You see, some bullets is special for a single aim
A certain stag, or a certain person
And no matter where you are, that's where the bullet will end up
And in the moment of aiming, the gun turns into a dowser's wand
And point where the bullet wants to go

(George Schmid was moving in a series of convulsive spasms, like someone
with an epileptic fit, with his face distorted and his eyes wild like a
lassoed horse bracing his legs. But something kept pulling him on. And now
he is picking up the skulls and making the circle.)

I guess old George didn't rightly know what he's getting himself into
The fit was on him and it carried him right to the crossroads

Sounds right. I've heard it refered to as "chipping" vs "chippying" but whatever, chippyin sounds better.

pioneers parrot, welcome to the forum. Glad you're up for a good mystery. This one's got me stumped. But it's surely got somethig to do with heroin. The carpenter thing -- well, that doens't work. The prostitute thing, though -- I think you're onto something. Lemme know if you figure it out.

Never mind. PixieSteve figured it out.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

You dirty dog, but so so true.

About the song, what the hell is a "chippyin' man?" Thats in the official lyrics book correct?

Chippyin' is such a rare word that it's not even in the Urban Dictionary.

Lotsa thoughts on the song here: http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17907

As for the video, it looks fairly professional. The guitar cord spaghetti is a little weird, though. And I might as well be the first to say it: Violet's baby is in for a treat when it's born.

Hey Grotesque, I missed your guys' thought on Tight Black Rubber on the BlackFrancis.net thread, Making Noise Section, until just now. I to appreciate the internet video alternative to MTV.

many thoughts. i love the song. i admire "(tight) black rubber"-verse nr. 5. it's so tight. and so black. it's like rubber.
