Posted - 08/07/2007 : 21:46:57 IMHO, the best song on Bluefinger. I see it as more of a Frank Black song than the Black Francis we see on the likes of Threshold, and Cpt.
I love the guitar riff when FBs singing "He played Piano really Fuckin good... ". It's very melodic. The song's also got an excellent narrative, and to me seems more like Frank as narrator as opposed to him embodying the spirit of brood, like on other album tracks. It also has a kind of late Catholics feel about it.
Agree / disagree? Any thoughts? |

Yes, Brood pronounced in Dutch sounds like "bread" -- which rhymes with dead. The angels whisper his name.
the song reminds me of the German film "Wings of Desire" where the angel tries to comfort the suicidal character, who jumps anyway. I bet Frank has watched that film.

Posted - 10/23/2007 : 06:35:49 Actually, I was serious, Soren! I worked in Holland for a time, and now that you mention it, I do recall brood means bread! Wow, never realised....I think my memory is going! And sorry billy, overlooked those posts!

Posted - 10/02/2007 : 20:27:20 Though the title track has risen to almost the same level as this one for me, "Angels" is still tops. It's a bit rough around the edges ("He played piano really fuckin' good" has to be the laziest lyric Frank's ever written, followed closely by "So he could paint, yeah he had he touch"), but the emotion in this song is off the charts. I love how his voice cracks on the word "dead." And, as said above, the outro is brilliant, as is the transition from this track to the next, where Brood is resurrected as none other than Black Francis.
I hear he's doing this one live now. For those who have heard it, has he sped it up at all? I bet it'd kick ass if it were played even faster.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Posted - 10/02/2007 : 08:37:38 Great song. In order to suck my wife into new Frank (new Black?), i start the album off with this one, then start Pasty up after Bluefinger. And this way Tight Black Rubber is the finisher, which works well :) |

Posted - 09/07/2007 : 16:48:38 really like this song, the ending is awesome, what i really really really really like about this song is the way that your mouth into mine comes straight after as part if the narrative. angels come to... is about his suicide, the bit at the end of that song is him jumping and the song after is (supposedly) his ressurection, which completely makes sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no one ever reads this far down into a thread anyway!! so blah, blah blah blahh bla bla bla blaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh blah!!! |

Posted - 08/17/2007 : 07:04:00 Coastline: I don't know. I think. I had to mess around quite a bit with the file format in order to get them to work on both my iRiver and my car CD player. The order might have been messed up in the process.
We Montrealers tend to be soooo unconventional.

I Agree with you, Cohen. It wasn't as good as the album version. However, it was nice to here FB giving a bit of a commentary for the song. Also, nice to hear it live and acoustic.

Hahaha, I've never attemted the Balamory theme! "Ba-la-mo-ry, ba-la-mo-ry!!"
That just seriously ruins it. The theme from the actual programme is better, not the remix. I actually watch it quite a bit. I love Miss Hoolies accent!
Oh yeah and 'Angels Come To Comfort You' is one of my favourites along with 'Threshold' and 'Bluefinger'.

It's funny that since Frank was talking about the interview on BBC (the one coastline was talking about) that I can't get that picture of the angels taking Herman Brood to heaven out of my head every time I listen to it.
