Being a Frank Black fan since 1994, I recognized that there are 2 main types of fans:

1. "FB rock hard and scream" fan
Favourite albums: Bluefinger - especially songs
Tight Black Rubber, Threshold Apprehension, Captain Pasty
All Pixies albums, especially Surfer Rosa
This type of fan does like the new FB tour, with FB
performing very punky.

2. "FB Acoutic Guitar and Alternative Country fan"
Favourite albums: Black Letter Days, Show Me your Tears,
Dog In the Sand, Honeycomb.
Favourite Songs: Panamerican Highway, New House of The Pope, etc.
This type of fan loves to see FB play solo acoustic most.
This fan does not care about the Pixies too much.

As for me, I am definitely fan no. 2 and I hope to see a full lenght solo acoustic show very soon

I konow, most of you will like all FB songs (me too, almost), but
it would be interesting to know what "kind of Frank" you enjoy
most ?

What's your "coffee and cigarettes on a sunday morning album"? Mine's usually Honeycombe...
PistoLaura Posted - 07/19/2007 : 07:58:16
I got into Black Letter Days which came out when I was about twenty. I'd heard of the Pixies (obviously) but didn't listen carefully until a couple of years ago. I love the way his career is so versatile that there's something for any occasion, and that he manages to take from the rich tapestry of american music without sounding like a parody... How many people could pull off material like Johnny Barleycorn without sounding a bit twee? Fast Man Raider Man is my fallback album; I play it when I'm writing and also in mixed age company- my mum and grandma both like it too!

I am loving the Blufinger album at the moment! I teach first year art history at a british university and am going to play it to my class in October when we look at outsider art as part of a critical dialogue... the Herman Brood angle will make a refreshing change from dragging out Billy Childish once again!

So, not sure what category I fit into... just a gal with great taste??

no disrespect to fb, but its a well known fact that the only permissable music on a sunday morning is "sunday morning" by the velvets...

Hmmm. Did you know "sunday morning" is about dreading sunday morning? Or more specifically Saturday night coming to an end?

Yeah, post-high paranoia. I remember a Sunday morning after a speedy Saturday in my late teens when a friend of mine was absolutely certain that the sun was following him for half an hour, trying to hide as we were walking home. And it's possibly where Kristofferson got the idea for Sunday Morning Coming Down from, my #1 Sunday song.

i thought there were 10 types,

those who understand binary and those that don't!

lolz.

"Idiot" is just her sig.

Fantastic way to put it, raasclaat. That's exactly how I feel. While I think it's cool that our guy FB was in the Pixies, and I did at one point have a lot of love for the Pixies songs, my heart's with FB solo stuff.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

The Sad Punk

Man, what a great song that was.

I guess that makes me a #1.
cptnpasty Posted - 07/12/2007 : 01:27:53
nope, i hadn't picked up on that.

it's still the most appropriate song for a sunday morning because the refrain is, like, "sunday morning", innit?

not rocket science, is it ?

I never saw the Catholics live (boo hoo) but they could do both things, which is probably the reason why I became a massive fan to begin with. Teenager is my favourite album, but Catholics live gigs are my favourite recordings. I still don't think I'd quite enjoy a Catholics gig as much as I did last week's gig in Nijmegen, though. So...another hybrid.
pixiestu Posted - 07/11/2007 : 03:20:58
Another boring answer, but I'm a fan of both categories, or however many categories there are now. I love it all equally just about, but I listen to the Catholics slightly more than the other eras. FB&TC's self-titled is my fave.

As a fellow fan since '94, I would respectfully suggest a third category.

3. "Put me on a desert island with TOTY and I'll be fine" fan
Favorite albums: Come on Pilgrim, Teenager of the Year, Black Letter Days
Favorite songs: Caribou, Superabound, California Bound
This type of fan is me.

dog in the Sand on a tuesday? are you mad?
cptnpasty Posted - 07/10/2007 : 03:49:04
but what about the fifth category, those who like surfer rosa and pistolero, but not honeycomb or come on pilgrim, and while perfectly happy to listen to dog in the sand on a tuesday, would never dream of putting bluefinger on at the weekend?
Blank_Frackis Posted - 07/09/2007 : 19:54:02
Ok this is just making it needlessly confusing, but there should be a fourth category in my opinion. Those who like Bluefinger, Teenager of the Year and the Pixies, also like Show Me Your Tears, Fast Man Raider Man, Dog in the Sand and Honeycomb just as much; however don't much like Frank Black and the Catholics, Pistolero or Cult of Ray.

That's the "anti-middle brigade", it's quite common from my experience and most of my friends belong to this group.

Admittedly, that one did surprise me! But there ya go... A venn diagram of musical styles would I'm sure have Frank Black and Garth Brooks cross somewhere on the giant miasma known as 'country'. Not that there's ever an accounting for taste....

I'd just add that Show Me Your Tears has a few high-rock moments, at least -- Massif Centarl, the Snake.... So even FB isn't sure what kind of fan he is of himself!

Eclectic all the way, baby. I'm sure if we aggrogated everybody's record collections on this board we would have every genre, if not every artist, ever conceieved of in 'pop music' and beyond!
Grotesque Posted - 07/09/2007 : 08:56:15
Anyway, this made me think Frank is on a good wave and what do you do as an artist when you're on a good wave ? You record something else ! "Garçon, one album for 2008 please!"
Vacuum Boots Posted - 07/09/2007 : 02:22:47
My fav Frank albums are 'Teenager' and 'Show me your Tears'. I love the yells and the Catholics although I didn't get into 'Honeycomb' or 'Fastman Raiderman' as much as I did his previous records.

I think there are two types of music fans, or rather two ways of listening to music. You can listen to music subjectively or completely

Now I think about it it's hard to see any forum members sliding simply into one of two types. But the point about phases of FB's career is something I hadn't really thought about before. Normally you think 'well that's just Charles, it's cool', or FB or whatever. Someone once posted that FB, Nick Cave and Tom Waits were their holy trinity and I replied 'See you in church'. They're all like that, they know who they are, what they're about, so why would they ever come off as phony or make a dud album.

Liz Phair's still cool in my book. I think she's still having the last laugh but that's another thread.

that is the best idea for a tattoo i have ever heard. perhaps there should be a Frank Black full back tattoo club. don't think i will be joining, though. unless maybe it was a Frank Black full back henna tattoo club. that is a little more up my alley.
