Just heard Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting for the Man" again, and it struck me that so much of what FB has done in his career is derivative of this one song. The lyrics are like a Pixies song: "I'm waiting for my man" and "Here he comes, he's all dressed in black." The sound is like a Catholics song, with the rocking piano like on SMYT. And the song is full of FB&C-like chord and key changes. And Lou Reed's voice! The resonance of young Lou's voice reminds me of what FB's voice is becoming with maturity. If you own this song, listen to it again. Imagine that Lou Reed has a time machine and has gone back and ripped off Future Frank on this classic Velvet Underground album.

When he repeats/stutters the word "Now" at about 1:10 into "Your Mouth Into Mine" I am reminded of Lou Reed repeating/stuttering the same word near the end of VU's "Here She Comes Now." Also, in "Massife Centrale," right after the line "And the sun is very clear," for some reason I always expect Frank to say "Watch me now!" just like Lou does at a certain point during "Sweet Jane." |

The guitar solo of the verses of Here Comes your Man is derivative of the one from Waiting for my man... but apart from that there are not so many similarities imo. The main one is undoubtedly that they are both crucial bands from the 50 last years.
I was heavily into the Velvet when i discovered them in 2000 and like anyone else I was influenced and had my "waiting for the man songwriting type period"...
But i must admit I got a bit bored with them. I no longer listen to the albums anymore (maybe "Squeeze" from time to time), I know them by heart and like old dope it makes you want to puke sometimes.
I used to think that every band was ripping off the Velvet Underground since I started to listen to pre-1966 rock'n roll...

I always felt like John Cale's violin/viola work was quite similar to Joey Santiago's role in Pixies.

I've also always thought that "Satellite Of Love" (the "Peel Slowly & See" version as well as the version on "Fully Loaded") has an strong Frank vibe...so yeah, what Jefrey said.

Check out "Satellite Of Love" - not the Loy Reed Transformer version, but the Velvet Underground version. I don't think it's on an album though, it might only be in the Peel Slowly and See box set. A lot of Frank Black similarities in there, the transitions, singing style, etc. It's got a breakdown where the whole some changes mood and tempo. Really great song.

Listening to the acoustic versions off the Christmass DVD (Two Reelers in particular) I was thinking, he sounds as unfussy and unfazed as Lou Reed did in VU days. He's there, he has become a singer like Lou Reed. The same clear vision.

Yeah, I've always thought that it was the quintessential Pixies inspiration, specifically the chord progression in the chorusy bit. |

The search feature isn't always that useful. I think it exists mainly so ye olde members can tell newbies they shoulda checked before posting their well-worn comments.

Well, I found this thread -- http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12805&SearchTerms=velvet,underground -- which talks about the Pixies ripping of the Velvet Underground and talks about the thread creator ripping off old threads. Now I feel bad I created this one. But man, it was an exciting moment to suddenly discover so much Frank in such an old song, and I couldn't help saying something.
