I am listening to some few tunes from Bluefinger for several days and I am so happy : Frank Black (or Black Francis) shows to all Pixies-fan he can do a Pixies album by himself. I don't know why this album has finally not been a Pixies tune (Frank ego or split) but anyway, Frank is so strong he can do what he wants and always be so good ! What excuses will "old-Pixies-fan" and "never-FB-fan" find this time for not supporting him? If they want Kim they still can return to the Breeders !

....Probabaly because it was recorded live. Don't know if it was mixed live, though. From the rough mixes on YouTube this sounds like the rockiest FB material since the Pixies. I love it.

Take the time to read through the ridiculously long Bluefinger thread in the 'Frank Black Making Noise' section of the forum. You'll find an answer then.

I think the moderators have adopted a "if you deserve to know, you'll know" policy. That's why your topic was locked.

Heh, that makes us sound a little elitist. It's just a case of not promoting downloading due for commercial release albums. People who have the album will usually share so ask them, I'll lock any thread that requests it because it's an impolite request and I'm nothing if not polite (guffaw!).

By the way though, I'm not the person to ask for it whoever emailed me. I'm polite but horribly grouchy.

Idiot.

Makes sense to me. Thanks for clearing that up, Tre. I didn't mean to offend.

I listened to Threshold Apprehension and I was very impressed. I think Frank is showing he can still do what he did when he was Black Francis. Maybe he hit a point in his life where he decided to move forward and incorporate EVERYTHING he has accomplished in his career. I think it would be wrong to say it is like a Pixies album. Frank is Frank whether he is with the Pixies or solo.

2 words sums it up for me:
FRANK ROCKS!!!!!!!!

Yep, Bluefinger is nothing like a Pixies album. It's reminding me of Costello's Blood & Chocolate.

'Was' is the keyword. No one here knows that there still is any animosity. The documentary, LoudSoft (or whatever it is called), suggests that there isn't.

And there are many people that liked the Pixies that don't like the solo/Catholics stuff (not many here because why would you hangout here if you haven't liked anything in past 10+ years) and some even here on this board that go the other way (dislike Pixies, like solo/Catholics).

I did not realize there were fans of the Pixies that are not fans of Frank. Honestly, i never have thought about it. I only hear Frank when I hear his music whether it is with the Catholics or the Pixies.

What is the deal with Pixie fans not liking FB? And are there FB fans that do not like the Pixies? I kind of thought they go hand in hand.

Does anyone NOT like Bluefinger? Seriously, when SMYT leaked there was a lot of mixed opinion. But apparently Bluefinger is the next DITS. Everyone loves it, apparently.

Waits. Charles has been floating the idea of Tom Waits producing the Pixies album, if he's interested. See that's the kind of thing Kim's probably holding out for which would suit Charles too. Hence a ruse. OK that's a stretch. Another chance to ask the question: Was Waits' album Bone Machine any kind of reference to Surfer Rosa's opener? I'm trying to figure out if Tom's a fan of Charles.

I agree. He's just doing what he does. And anyway hasn't he always? A man sings like that you know no one's pushing him around. As for Kim, her hesitancy serves everyone, Charles included, until a new Pixies record gets made or doesn't get made. I think Kim and Charles both understand that. They've been around. Personally I'm hoping it's all a ruse to get Tom involved.

Or maybe it's arranged the way it is because that's how he thought he could best paint the Herman Brood painting he wanted to make. Isn't it obvious? Forget the Pixies, forget going back to the TOTY sound, forget mixing different aspects of his career. He got into Brood's parts, and into Brood's charts, and this is the sound he thought was appropriate for paying homage to Brood. I'm not a big Brood fan, and I don't know his music other than from watching a few YouTube videos, but I think FB was trying to do a sort of impression of Brood's vibe with this album -- in the lyrics AND the sound.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.
Jason Posted - 04/27/2007 : 13:15:25
In my opinion, the "Joey Santiago sound" is just about the DEFINING sound of the Pixies. Without that distinctive lead guitar, I'm hesistant to say Bluefinger IS what a new Pixies record would be like.

This is all pure 100% fanboy speculation that might be totally wrong, but I do wonder if Frank decided to have no lead guitar on Bluefinger for that very reason. Frank putting together a four-piece band for his Black Francis record would have people comparing that band to the Pixies. With a three-piece band, it stands farther apart from the Pixies.

You can access new tunes on youtube.com and search on black francis.
I totally agree with houstonguthrie, and I am just so glad I may stop hearing "FB is not the Pixies, I don't like him..." after Bluefinger will be available. I will see 2 times FB on concert on June and he could play the whole FM/RM album only and I would be the happiest man !

i wouldn't say it was fb sounding like the pixies, but it is fb rocking like he hasn't in a long time.

The constant speculation re;kim deal and a new record is a lot of hot air, and i've been guilty too, but you can't beat up on people too much for wondering - after all, fb himself is responsible for generating the speculation...

agree with the observation above that if it's a fb song, it's an fb song period.
yingguoguizi Posted - 04/27/2007 : 02:51:00
Yep, agree bollocks.

Also if people like Pixies and don't like FB it is their loss. Come on though, lets not diminish Bluefinger by saying it's FB sounding like the Pixies. The album is awesome per se. The man's just doing what he does.
Ziggy Posted - 04/26/2007 : 17:08:55
I hate it when people try to invent a 'Charles and Kim hated each other' story. I ran into someone yesterday, who tried to tell me that Kim had a hand in writing "most of the Pixies' songs".
houstonguthrie Posted - 04/26/2007 : 16:46:35
to paraphrase - "It's all Charles Thompson" folks

All this business about Pixies and the constant Pixies obsession is silly in my opinion. Every song he ever wrote or participated in has his signature on it - from "Tame" to "Selkie Bride". Any song he ever wrote could have been a Pixies song if they had played on it. I love Joey's crazy leads, David's rocking drums, and Kim's bass lines and sultry voice. But when I hear the Pixies I here Charles. His stamp is on everything - and it's his stamp that is the draw in my opinion. I like him solo acoustic most of all!! I don't care if he calls himself Captain Kangaroo and records polkas - it's still going to be Charles Thompson. I don't get the need to put everything into little compartments.

pixiestu Posted - 04/26/2007 : 16:18:33
Who needs the Pixies when FB is making records this good!? To be honest I think some people are reading too much into the 'Bluefinger is Frank's way of trying to persuade Kim to do a Pixies record' theory. And the whole 'Blufinger was meant for the Pixies' thing that I've seen a few times on here.

I'd rather have solo Frank anyway.

treetime Posted - 04/26/2007 : 11:38:16
Frank rocks, but it seems that the rest of the pixies bring something that is different than solo Frank. Let's be honest, the vocal combo of Kim and Black is unique.
darwin Posted - 04/26/2007 : 11:34:07
And why do they insist on participating in the "battle" between Black and Deal that they imagine is happening?
