He's used tons on tv. His instrumentals get used on sports tv a lot. Tame was used in a Gillette razor ad too I remember. That was really strange.

Woke up this morning, made some toast and a cup of coffee... sat down on the couch with the wife who was watching Chinese t.v. I was thinking 'In ten minutes time I'll do some work.' Then there was a commercial break, and all of a sudden I start hearing 'Man of Steel.' I thought that iTunes had turned itself on in the bedroom, but as it turned out the Chinese were using the song as background music to their advert. Very strange.

Every now and again you get to hear songs from The Cure, Skid Row, and now I guess Frank Black on adverts... it always throws me a little as its quite unexpected. I seriously doubt that Frank will be getting any royalties from this airplay though!

>>I think Red Right Hand was in the movie if I remember properly<<

Nope, it is in the episode "Ascension" as Duane Barry is driving.

Yeah but some of those songs were actually on the show. I know for a fact that I heard AT LEAST Red Right Hand, and Unmarked Helicopters (as I said, in my Max episode when Mulder and Skully went in his trailer) on the show. Can't remember hearing Man Of Steal on any of the episodes, though, to speak.

It's so weird. I was gonna make this topic but I just didn't bother. It's such a great song.

if i weren't already a believer, that song would turn me into one

speaking of songs about agent Murder and agent Silly, when i first heard Catatonia's Cerys Matthews' voice, i thought it was Kim Deal

"Man of Steel" was never in any episode. I'm obsessed with X-Files, trust me. Or trust no one, actually.

It's one of my favorite Frank Black songs, and favorite songs of all time. Can not comprehend how a Frank Black fan wouldn't like the song. Not saying they're "wrong", but I just can't comprehend what they would find usically or lyrically distasteful to them about the song, and how they would also like other songs by him. Shrug.

I love Oddballs, but this song sticks way out on it. Lushly produced, epic, pretty multilayered space ballad...it's clearly one of Frank's all time classic songs.

And the song would be nothing without the ending...the ending is thematic to the entire point of the song...wondering on and on and on...forever...asking the big question..."is there a place?" over and over, and never getting an answer. The ending IS the song. Hell, the other lyrics barely even matter, because the whole song is that one question.

And hell any song about Mulder is good for me. But what the hell is an ad-heist?

Man Of Steel, Motorway To Roswell and The Happening are perfect driving at night songs, for those who haven't tried. And I can't think of a song I'd rather hear live. That's Holland in July if you're reading this, Frank.

Yeah. Songs In The Key of X Was great. Don't forget Soul Coughing's 'Unmarked Helicopters' (which was quite funnily featured in the Max X-files episode) and Nick Cave's Red Right Hand. I too have often listened to Man of Steel while driving on lonely roads late at night, and also while sitting in desolate coffee shops, hoping girls would talk to me to no avail. "I can't feel no stares, I got me a real ad-heist" Brilliant track really
Jefrey Posted - 04/24/2007 : 01:02:35
That was actually a pretty good CD. My sister had it, and for some reason it was always played at family gatherings back then. It's got a lot a variety and the parents and grandparents don't seem to mind it. I liked "Unmarked Helicopters" by Soul Coughing off it.

Two great versions - Peel and live from '99. Thanks.

Intro could sit easy on a David Lynch soundrack never mind x-files.

Mr Costline,
I respect your point of view. It's only the words "ugly" and "annoying".. that hurts..
For one of my best friends "Man of Steel" is the best song of all times (no kidding!). You should never, but never meet him. :-)

-It's only music y'know-

We need to have a serious chat beer, Mr. Coastline.

That song's even more annoying to my ear than "Man of Steel." I don't say that to say you're wrong (even though you are, Soren), but because I have to be honest. Can't be a total fan boy about *everything* The Man does. There is a tiny slice of his music I don't like, and much of it is on "Oddballs."

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

One of the epic Frank tunes. Love this song, it is so powerful.

Great riff and the extended outro is perfect, damn all you naysayers. Oh, there are no naysayers. Ah well the word naysayers doesn't get used enough.
endofmiles Posted - 04/17/2007 : 05:43:54
Oh yes he did!!

I know because I saw it ;-). It was during the pistolero tour back in '98. This show was very special for me. First song back then: "Wave of Mutilation"(UK surf)..

has he ever played Man of Steel live?

The ODDBALLS mix is quite different than the SONGS IN THE KEY OF 'X' mix...guitar much more crashing and brought closer...I have always been mesmerized by this cool little song. In fact, the outro of ANGELS COME TO COMFORT YOU is much like MOS...I like to say "there is a place" at the end of that song.

Amazing song with a phenomenal ending. I'd love it if they extended that ending live for at least five minutes. Wow. That's so powerful.

A definite classic.
fbc Posted - 04/16/2007 : 09:44:16
I have to say the ending is all killer to me. That little ditty of a riff at the beginning and all the way through the outro comes close to equalling Boom Chika Boom's genius riff.

There is, you know. A place, that is.
Sprite Posted - 04/16/2007 : 02:18:57
Have to agree with those that love this song. I think the whole tune is great and I like the production too (espcially the bit that sounds like castanets). I dont know when this came out exactly but I remember hearing it after Cult of Ray and it cheered me up a lot as I was not a big fan of that album.
vilainde Posted - 04/16/2007 : 01:57:24
I didn't know there were people here who don't love the song. It's a classic. How it was omitted from the Best Of is beyond me.

Love this song also, one of my all time favourites. The ending is quite long i agree, but i think it works great for the song.

Man of Steel is my favorite B-side hands down.
Although I haven't heard One More Road For The Hit or Snake Oil, so there's not that many to choose from...
And I love the ending.
IceCream Posted - 04/15/2007 : 11:12:28
I like this song, but it definitely signifies that Frank's "eccentric" period was coming to an end. The end of this song is interesting at first, but I think it goes on about 30 seconds too long. A I-IV-V progression is a bit unusual for Frank, but it definitely fits as a coda.
Jason Posted - 04/15/2007 : 09:10:58
It was on the X-Files TV show "soundtrack" CD, not the movie soundtrack.

I think the ending of this song is perfect.
