I download this with a bunch of other songs and it jsut caught my ear straight away.
After the sweet opening it cracks into what i luv about frank when he gets it just right
The song repeats it self over and over with just different guitar lines over the top (similar to pixies).
Lovely and lonely and desperate lyrics , reaching out for forgiveness perhaps??

is he the dog??

beautiful melody

one of my favs

saw the album yesterday and snapped it up. My first catholics album :)

It's one of the most gorgeous and heartbreaking songs I've ever heard.

I also remember when I first heard DOG IN THE SAND how dissapointed I was the first few seconds, immediately recognizing it as a reworked SURF EPIC. But that dissipated almost immediately.

That's a great memory. I smiled, too. The words "this is your new home" resonate loud between my ears.

I saw Frank play this at McCabe's in Los Angeles in December of 2000 before the release of DITS. I had aquired the CD months ahead of time and felt special that I knew ALL the DITS songs he performed that night and dorkily sang along (silently, of course) with them. It was a solo show, acoustic, but he did have a number of suprise guests perform with him...Morris Tepper, Dave Phillips (no one knew who he was), and suprisingly Lyle Workman! (Frank attempted to teach him 'Angst' that night, and it was all over the place...hilarious!)

Anyhow, during his solo version of Dog in the Sand, I anxiously awaited for the "kill it with your shoe" part because I thought it was amusing. To my delight, apparently the rest of the audience did too, for when he sang it, everyone started laughing. Frank smiled and giggled as well. Funny memory.

I saw this and just had to declare my love for the song.

Been listening to the gig stymie uploaded. The first Catholics gig I've listened to in a long time and it took me back to happier times. My god they were a great band. Cluttered sound at times with 3 guitars but what they could do to Mr. Grieves, Nimrod's Son, Fiddle Riddle and Los Angeles was something else. Best Pixies cover band ever!!

I think the song is one of the best Frank's ever written and certainly one of the best ways to end what I think is the Catholic's finest album. The tune is soothing peaceful and unique.

I was almost gonna say "whatever happened with this?"

That's how I got into the Catholics, and FB solo as well. I'd been listening to the old Pixies albums since about 95 or 96, then when black letter days came out I picked it up on a whim and loved it. I had just moved to San Diego at the time and California Bound struck a nerve or something. Anyway within the next six months I'd bought everything the catholics did along with the three solo albums. It's been a healthy obsession ever since

hey there

well i actually havent started at the catholics. I hav just started to listen to them. But i have had teenager for years.
It was the first frank solo i heard. When i first heard i was very underwhelmed. I really had to try and focus to listen to it. Then i put it away for a few months and then listened to it again and it clicked. Now i listen to it all the time

I fuckin love that album and im still finding little pleasures in it everyday.

'Surf Epic' is featured in its full glory on the "Longest Songs" fb.net podcast (#21 or 22 I think) - so if you can't find it in stores or from people, you can listen to it there.
