I love the early roxy. I bought avalon (on cassette) after frank recorded remake remodel and was curious as to why he liked this band. I honestly only listened to it a handful of times and then really got into their earlier stuff. I don't hate it. it's just not my bag. but maybe one day. :)

Don't you dare dissing Avalon! I love that record (and everything RM have ever recorded - except Country Life which isn't too good)
I know nothing about the Sparks except This Town and the Dirtbombs cover, but I'd love to get a listen some day.

oh man. it's so good. it came out in 72. and it was so ahead of the game. i always get the title wrong.
'A Woofer In Tweeter's Clothing' is even weirder than Sparks' debut album. In fact it is so weird in places that it freaks you out. Ron's rickety organ is as prevalent as ever, as is Russell's piercing falsetto, and the songs are enhanced by a bewildering array of special effects (e.g. backwards tape loops, speeded up vocals, reverb, lots of distortion etc.). To quote Russell Mael, "We were doing things like sampling - long before 'sampling' was even a term".
I think like roxy music they were best before they got too famous. their later stuff is somewhat hit or miss IMHO.

R. Stevie Moore is some kind of lo-fi legend. Some say he's a DIY pioneer. He's been making and publishing his music since the late seventies. He plays whatever he wants, so he isn't really pinned down to one genre of music.

that was also a great concert. at least the first time i saw him. in 08 i think. the 09 show was pretty good too. definitely worth seeing at least once (have you seen the documentary about him?

I put Townes on mine, and i agree he fully deserves to be on any songwriting list. Maybe he's not on many because he's somewhat of a lesser known songwriter ( a cult songwriter), and maybe because alot of frank black fans will come from more of an alternative background than a country background.

Well for me, and this is no slight to Frank, the best songwriters of all time are: Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen (two Canadians, woot!).
Songwriters i would put around the same level as frank: Townes Van Zandt, Lou Reed, Johnny Cash, Kurt Cobain, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, John Lennon, Jack White, Daniel Johnston and more that I can't think of this second.

People such as adam greene have definitey written great songs, as well as elvis costello (who has made 3 amazing albums (imho)) and a few that blow (imho). he and bowie are what i would consider prolific song writers. and they are some of my faves.
but my all-time faves, the ones i tihnk are the best are ones that i think are not only prolific, (although obviously not required to be as you will see as you look after the first few on my list) but consistent and they are the ones that top the list.
And in order they would be:
