A rather guitar geekish question here, but it's been on my mind nonetheless. Why does Frank choose to use Voxes when playing solo with a band, yet stick to Marshall cabs when on the Pixies reunion tour. Listening to several of the Pixies boots, FB's guitar had a lot less presence and, in my opinion, impact, than before.

Yeah, but all of the Teles he's had work done on have had the 'buckers taken out, and there's just a solitary, single coil pickup at the bridge.
Doog Posted - 02/24/2007 : 16:24:19
They don't sound too hot in single coil mode, truth be told.. and I know Black is a single coil guy. I recently rotated the bridge pickup so the active coil in "coilsplit mode" is closer to the neck so less thin sounding.

Sounds oooookay, but it ain't gonna ever rival a Strat or real Tele.

Sell it to Frank!

I wonder if FB could pop up and give us some more guitar info. Why doesn't he use those 'hot rods' more often?
endofmiles Posted - 02/24/2007 : 06:06:45
What's the playmate guitar of the month??

Very nice collection that you have there Doog. I like the acoustic one...soooo sexy..

I have a friend who is selling a white telcaster(like the one frank used) he is also trying to get rid of a t.c. electronic booster/distortion pedal. So if anyone is interested lemme know.

The sound of a Rickenbacker is pretty distinctive, coffeecan, high on the treble, jingle-jangley.
Think of "Ticket To Ride", think of The Byrds. Expensive too.

And you want porn, you got some in all it's nakedness: http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12671

OldManInaCoffeeCan Posted - 12/31/2006 : 06:42:40
ahhh yes, GUITAR PORN, very nice. Good-looking bunch you got there.

I'm not a picker/player, but I do love to watch and listen

Hey, last night I was checking out some local bands and one of the guitar players in "GLOSSARY"
[Murfreesboro, TN] was playing a Rickenbacker. I don't know anything much 'bout guitars, but
when I saw and heard that guitar it grabbed my attention. He also played a SHO-BUD pedal steel
on one song (not as fancy as Rich Gilbert, but enjoyable nonetheless).

Anyway, I miss that GUITAR PORN thread,...where is it, by the way.

My Contemporary Tele plus friends.

I was gonna sell it since the Pixies cover band I played in is unlikely to reform, but I like the guitar in it's own right- the tremolo is grrrrrreat and it's nice to have a guitar loaded with buckers as an option.

As some of you may recall, The Man shared this interesting information with us on Oct 17, 2005 in the "King Holds Court" thread, page 30]

...Oh yeah, and some folks were asking about your guitars you had with you. So what's the story with those, if you don't mind sharing it with us.

well. those telecasters (i have four) are fender 'specials'. they were made in the 80's in japan. kind of a heavy metal tele thing. they had locked tuning, two humbucker pickups (very un-tele. kind of hard rock modern pick up if you will), and a whammy bar. i have gradually modified the guitar ovber the years, and whatever change i do, i do to all four teles. a few years ago a very well known and respected guitar repair guy in L.A. who goes by the name Toru (he is from japan) did the latest mods. i wanted them to sound more vintage, and so i asked Toru if we could dry the wood out somehow (this is how a guitar sounds better with age. the old finish cracks, and moisture is released gradually causing the guitar to become lighter and more resonant. modern guitars don't do thus cuz the finishes are different chemicals, and they don't crack, therefore they don't get resonant. this is one reason why some players like old guitars). So Toru says that he's got a friend back in japan who smokes the guitars to dry them out. so Toru stripped the paint off my teles, took them to japan, smoked them for three days (they smelled like bbq for months), put old style tuning pegs on them, kept the whammy bridge, ut cuz i like to scrape my pick on the old style bridge pieces, cut on of those in half just for this purpose, took out one of the pick ups, put a vintage style single coil pick up closest to the bridge, and i think at one point i had already removed the tone knobs on all the guitars. those are my modded out fender teles. Toru had kidded with me that a logo--which i had suggested---should simply be a red circle a la the japanese flag. i should do that. they don't sound or feel exaclty like a vintage telecaster, but they're pretty close. plus you can whammy around on em!

Fender Japan produced them for a couple of years, the 'Contemporary' Series, with humbuckers and Floyd Rose trems on the bridge. It's the guitar that BF plays on the 1988 Town and Country Club show on the first Pixies dvd.

Doog owns one, I believe.

A white, Japanese 1980's model, I think...Soren?

Merry Christmas!

What kind of Telecaster is the 'Black Francis' one??
I'm pretty sure someone was selling one here before but I can't find the thread. I'm not a late bidder lol, just curious

Here's a shot of the pedals on the recent tour. I'm sure they're Frank's, considering where they're situated.

Any guesses what they could be, geeks?
Ziggy Posted - 12/29/2006 : 06:07:50
Someone mentioned he was using a RAT nowadays.

With the Block/Feldman/Jarvis band, he's seemed to have returned to using Voxes exclusively.

Also wonder why those hot rodded Japanese Teles only seem to make occasional outings, at a couple of solo shows. Though in the Pixies rehearsals, in loudQUIETloud, he appears to be using one.

I should get out more.
Doog Posted - 12/29/2006 : 05:18:17
If memory serves, Charlie used both a Vox AC30 and a few Marshall half stacks live with an A/B footswitch back in the day- meaning his clean sound came from the Vox, and the dirty from the Marshall..

Not sure what setup he's using for the reunion shows, but I know what you mean about the guitar sound.. its way too distorted and muddy. None of the glorious "clang" of the old days.

Going from all the photos of reunion shows I could find on Google, it looks like he's just using the Marshalls (and the California Blonde amp for his acoustic). Maybe he's just playing overdriven all the time, or maybe has a pedal for dirt? Who knows, I'm all geeked out.
