*finally* got my copy of Fast Man.

Wow. I started with disc 2 and it's been completely impossible to take it out of my cd player. I could barely get past "In the Time of my Ruin". Such a completely perfect song.

Took a quick glance at the liner notes to see there's some 30(ish) people who played on this album ! Not the least of which was Rich ! And then I come across a series of bad reviews ?

*blank stare*

What did people want ? 20 years of Teenager of the Year ? I find Frank's sound has been evolving on every album to get to this point. And in my humble opinion, it's finally the best it's ever been (we can quantify that later). You could feel this shift start in Dog in the Sand, and for me, "Show Me Your Tears" was a clear sign of things to come.

Others will say "we didn't want 20 years of teenager, we just miss the catholics". To that I can reply with the same thing: You wanted 20 years of Catholics ? Why ? I loved them too, but the evolution in song writing, the contribution of so many other artists...to me the progression is fantastic. I can't imagine where it will be in 10 years.

To me this new sound is something I can lose myself in when I drive. Something I can play when I'm home, something I'll throw on when I'm up or down. There's so much more to this then slow slow slow faaaaaaaaaaaast. I've certainly never had a way with words, and I could never expect to properly explain why I think Frank's work is as good as it is. I just want the people stuck in the teenager years, or the catholic years, to try listening to fast man 10-20-30 times...and if it's still not your thing, c'est la vie. I didn't like "The Aviator" :P

Just pulled this out of an interview someone posted on here. And I think this statement is meant for all the people who keep wanting Frank to live in the past:

"IMS: For you, what do you think has been your biggest challenge as a solo artist?

FB: I don’t know, I guess the biggest one is just escaping a shadow you will never escape. I guess the inevitable just hangs over you, like the sun, you just can’t escape it.

"

I was a hawk, and I just flew... yeah.

"it's more like we wanted 20 years of good music"

I can see someone with "pixie" in their name saying that. I think this is great music. Maybe the sound isn't for the people who liked things...harder ? I'm not sure what the word might be.

I love Blue Rodeo, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen, Muddy Waters, Tom Petty, Neil Young... and I find this sound is pulling elements from all those artists and turning it into something new and fantastic. I don't know a thing about country, or I would have named some artists that I'm sure you can feel in there also.

I love this album :)
