Posted - 08/11/2006 : 18:40:56 Has this topic already been brought up??? if so please re-direct me but a close friend recently suggested that Frank is obsessed with the water. and as much of a fan as i am, i am inclined to agree. what percentage of all Frank Black songs/Pixies songs have even a slight 'water' reference? to name a few and start this off... : Wave of Mutilation 'multiple references inc. 'Crustation' "down by the water, you'll find your happy days/and we make love beside the water way" Burn Today "whats that floating in the water" - "Neptunes Daughter" Mr Greives Selkie Bride fishermans storys Dipict many waterey scenes with this. Song Of the Shrimp Barthoemew 'Laid by a river' 21 reasons 'From the water jumped a bloody hand' Announcement 'Beyond the waves of the bay Between water and light' Dog in the Sand 'Where the water glows Where the water glows' Monkeys gone to heaven 'An underwater guy who controlled the sea' Pray for the Girls 'Felt underwater when I tried to scream' Where Is My Mind? 'I was swimming in the Caribbean animals were hiding behind the rock except the little fish' Cult of ray 'In the deep water Is an old man...' etc. what do you think? |

Posted - 08/23/2006 : 10:07:37 I've managed to get hold of lyrics for a as-yet-unreleased Frank song:
Water.

Posted - 08/23/2006 : 08:50:27 Back when I liked Live (their first two albums -- Mental Jewelry and Throwing Copper), I noticed they mentioned water an inordinate number of times. Like mixedbizz said, water is the ultimate metaphor. And good songwriters know how to exploit that.

Posted - 08/22/2006 : 19:59:03 Looking at all of Frank's output, one can say, yes, water is a reoccurring lyrical theme/tool/ambiance-setter. However, take a look at almost every other long-term successful songsmith. Within the rock/country/blues idiom, water is mentioned so often and consistently that it is actually pretty unremarkable. What makes it cool is how you use it within a given lyrical context. Just off the top of my head, I'll throw out a few bands/artists that mention water fairly often. Beach Boys (obvious), Johnny Cash, Les Claypool/Primus, Mance Lipscomb, Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler, Doors, Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, The Band, Cat Stephens, Rolling Stones; I know I'm mostly naming big name bands here, many of which are classic rock bands that take more than their share of lyrical influence from older music, mostly blues and folk, in which water pops up lyrically as often as the springtime rain shower. I don't have too much of a problem refering to FB and Rolling Stones in the same paragraph either. Listen to Exile on Main Street and follow it up with Devil's Workshop. The influence runs pretty deep. I invite you to look through your other non Frank Black albums and start counting the water refrences. Jazz, Blues, Folk, Country, Rock, even non lyrical classical. It seems to always be there. I'm willing to bet if asked, Charles would likely point out water's significance in American music as well. It's fairly obvious from his last four or five albums that he has really been soaking up some more traditional music, lately. Anyway, that's my thoughts on it. |

Posted - 08/20/2006 : 18:07:04 Water is the ultimate metaphor. It can mean whatever you want it to mean, ie. life, death, fear, sex. Admittedly FB has a gift for exploiting this particular metaphor.

Posted - 08/19/2006 : 02:41:30 Water is life. Yet water can be death. Water can reflect life. Death can be seen beneath water. Some things live in water and cannot live on land. Some thing live on land and need water to live, but would die if they lived in water.

Posted - 08/11/2006 : 20:08:38 Yeah, but water is a great subject when you are really singing about chicks. It's light reflecting properties make it one of the most visually attractive settings in nature, yet beneath lurks mystery, risk, and danger. And that fish smell...
