Today I experienced one of the greatest benefits of digital music when I preordered a new Lucero CD. I'm wondering if the business model below that was used for this preorder is something that is possible with future FB records.

I preorder a CD that's not available for 2 more months. The record is done, so the Artist/Label gives me permission to download the record to start listening to it today. I receive my record at the time of release. I think Amazon does this with already released records, but it's the first time I've ever seen it done with a pre-release.

I often wait until a CD is released to listen (even if I have access to a leaked copy) because I want to be sure that I have all the released tracks in the right order and listen to it the first time the way it was intended.

This may have been a special situation because of the artist/label relationship, but I love the idea of the future of FBs music being available to paying fans as soon as the record is complete. Maybe one day.

yea I'm not sure if and where I should post it, but I figured the moderaters will fix what they don't like. I just remember someone in King Holds Court suggesting that FB should look into recording live pixies shows and he made it happen. FBs music always seems to get out early for whatever reason, and I just thought it'd be cool if it got out because he wanted it to get out when it was ready.

Yeah, that sounds like a very smooth solution. You'll have the CD once it's out, but you won't have to wait for it's release/shipping but can listen to it immidiatly. The downside of that is that the risk of the album "leaking" and spreading illegally previous it's release would be many times higher.
