I always thought it meant kissing the ring of the Pope.

But we were watchig Weeds on DVD and the last episode. My friend said it reminded him of the Godfather where his business associates got down and kissed his ring.

So do you thik this is about the Pope or the Godfather or something else?

(I did a search on this and nothing came up).

Do you have any clue why so many people hate it?
I imagined maybe Frank was playing here with his own status of Grunge Godfather who could say "Kiss My Ring" to the young bands, and maybe some didn't appreciate that sense of humour (close to the one of "Freedom Rock" by the way).

I thought it was mostly a marrige break-up song. Wedding-ring/chocolate-star pun sort of thing. I think the fast man version is better than the more guitary version left off honeycomb, as you can hear more detail in the excellent rhythum gt.

I wonder who the accountant with the fountain is.

The song includes a few lines that seem to be Biblical/religious references. "Spilled my seed on the ground" could possibly refer to the story of Onan in the book of Genesis, while "Go Tell It On The Mountain" is an old spiritual Christmas song. I don't think either of these is strong enough to make the song a clear reference to the Pope (or any other religious figure), though.

It was also something that kings used to do...

Ring-kissing is a pretty general sign of respect - i think its just about people showing respect.
