Hi,

I'm a new member and an old frank black fan. I know the song is like 5 years old but I want to know if anyone else noticed that the chorus in "California Bound" has it's bar reduced from 6/4, to 5/4, to 4/4, to 3/4, to 2/4, to 1/4 as in:

* = quarter note

* * * * * * G#min
Don't Worry

* * * * *F#
Don't bring yourself down

* * * *E
Don't let your

* * *D#
Mind chase you

* *C#
Like a

*B
Hound

I think that is brilliant.

Yeah, that 'shorting the bars' thing is pretty cool when used properly!

It's weird stuff like this that makes me love Frank.

Remember when I used to have good sigs? No? Well, screw you!
orangemagic Posted - 07/15/2006 : 16:37:01
Oh, I forgot to mention The end of "I've Seen Your Picture" on dog in the sand. Does he fuck with those bars or what?

Word, word everybody! What's happenin?

yes. orangemagic, frank is the man, i appreciate foruming with my fellow devotees. l ron hubbard is way lame. why don't all the scientologists switch over to frankblack.net? not enough forceful recruitment i guess.
orangemagic Posted - 07/14/2006 : 11:11:10
Thanks for playing "Kicked in the Taco" in podcast #10. The song rules.
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 07/14/2006 : 09:17:13
We're alternating interviews, so no, the next podcast has an interview with a different character from the FB circus. Then number 12 will have our next chat with FB.

"No man remains quite what he was when he recognizes himself."

Hey CultOfFrank, what does he talk about in the interview clip? Are you talking about the California Bound chorus? Will the interview be in the next podcast? I can't wait.

Thanks Franknweezer. I know how to play the verse in Valentine in Garuda, but have never tried to figure out the chorus. You're right. The chord changes do sound all over the place.

Bonedry, Frank is the proverbial "man". Of course we're big fans.

Is anybody else going to see Frank in Brooklyn, NY on August 19th?

Good ear, orangemagic.
What do you think about Valentine and Garuda? That's a fun one to play because the chord changes are all over the place.

Damn you guys, figuring that out before we have a chance to play our little interview clip with fb talking about that. :)

We're still playing it anyway...

"Don't let your mind chase you like a hound" = "Are they grey or is it my own nation?"

Or "almost =".
orangemagic Posted - 07/13/2006 : 08:57:34
Yeah Mr. Buscuitdoughhead. You're right about "Big Red". It's similar to what he does in "Atom In My Heart".

Carl, the "California Bound" chorus is indeed quite tricky to play for obvious reasons. It helps if you sing the words while you play it because it gives you cues on when to go to the next chord.

Hammerhands, I know what you mean about the 8/8, 7/8 thing in "Raiderman". It is odd. I'm not sure if we're talking about the same part of the song but I think the chorus has a five chord progression, similar to the chorus of "Billy Radcliffe". I want to write a song that has a five chord cycle in part of it. I keep forgetting to try that. I haven't tried to figure out "Don't cry that Way". Is that a cover song?

Two Reelers, you can play anything you put your mind to.

Villainde, the word play you refer to in "True Blue" is just nuts. I believe that often times the word games that Frank plays, particularly that thing in "True Blue" that you explained, can only be detected on a subconscious level if at all. It's insane. I also find it amazing how even when he plays those word games he still is able to make coherent and beautiful lyrics. It never sounds like he is just sticking a word in there that just rhymes with the other word. I'm so jeaulous.

Hey, how about The chorus of "If Your Poison Gets You"? That's cool how he makes the last chord 2/4 instead of 4/4. It's gotten to the point where it sounds strange to me when he holds a chord for a "normal" amount of time.

Has anyone figured out how to do "Don't cry that way"

I think I counted 28 beats, or 30 from where he starts singing the chorus with accents on...ummm...ah...er...

And I think he changes it.
hammerhands Posted - 07/13/2006 : 02:38:05
Yes, sir.

This review made me chuckle because the album is loaded with all sorts of counting chores.

http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16037&whichpage=2

"Old Pixies fans, roused from their graves by the recent reunion tour (the T-shirt called it the "Sell Out" tour), may pick up this record in the hope of finding quirky time signatures, insanely amped-up drums, surf guitars and yelped cod-Spanish lyrics about space-aliens.

In that respect, they will be disappointed."

There's 4-6-6-4, 6/8 8/8, (I think it was something equal to 13 beats), seven-bar turn-arounds...

I was going to suggest that hodjpokol ask FB if he made his musicians take a counting test, or supply a doctorate of music.

http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16392&whichpage=1
hodjpokol: "i seem to remember just talking a whole lot of rubbish about time signatures after that."

KFS: "Rubbish?"

That's great, orangemagic. It's a bit like what he does at the end of Pure Denizen of the Citizens Band ("One thing I cannot stand..."), only more clever.

I thought the word play on True Blue was in the discopedia but it isn't. It's quite awesome actually, the last syllable of each line in the first verse spells "In a little while" ("wanderIN", "narghilE", "the hIT", "settLE", "crocodILE"). Hope you see what I mean, Frank explains it better. And then during the second verse the scheme is identical but reversed: "smILE", "bottLE", "IT", "stAY", "terrapIN".

hammerhands, I suppose you're talking about If Yr Poison Gets You?

Did you hear the 8/8 7/8 on FM/RM?

(or 4-4-4-3, if you rather)

Try playing that without counting!
Carl Posted - 07/12/2006 : 17:58:46
Hi, orangemagic. Interesting. I find that part a bit tricky to play- timing wise, obviously!

Big Red has weird rhyming in it, too:
Have you heard about the bIg rEd
they even made a beebrEad rIg

he switched it so it would rhyme if it was "rig beebread" in the second line, but it does sound cool the way it is.

If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?
orangemagic Posted - 07/12/2006 : 15:46:17
Thanks. I've always wondered what he was talking about. That's a nice picture by the way.

Oh yeah. What is "sluice way" anyway?

I never read that. I remember listening to that song and thinking that he was doing something like that. That's so cool.
Suicide_Samurai Posted - 07/12/2006 : 14:59:09
One you may have heard before...in an interview Frank talks about how the chords in the "They call me true blue" verse are the same chords as the "Though some things have gotten small" verse, but in reverse.

He also mentions the word game in it, too, but I can't be bothered going through that...

There must be so much more stuff that has gone unappreciated.
orangemagic Posted - 07/12/2006 : 14:53:12
Oh sure. The "Massif Centrale" verses have it. ex: "I can see it in your eyes
and I can hear it when you talk.
darlin when I see you walk
you seem so very nice"

"In The Time Of Ruin" has it. Lot's of others.

"Chip Away Boy" is interesting too in that it is like a mirror in terms of the lengths of the verses and the choruses.

"i used to have some fun, me and everyone, now I'm just employed" (Bars half length)

short chorus

"I remember humid nights, I remember how the full moon tugs, how it used to make us fight and the language of the bugs, and even our doomsday" (Bars full length)

Long Chorus

"I think I'm fallin in love, now she's falling off her stool, it's not me she's thinking of, and I'm her little fool, and she's my Helen of Troy" (Bars full length)

Short Chorus

"You put on your camisole, and I'll jump in the rabbit hole, and head for the sleuth's way" (Bars half length)

Short Chorus

End

I hope that this makes sense and that I'm right because it took me a long time to type all that. I't not a perfect mirror but it's close and I think it adds to the emotional impact of the song.

You gotta love the ABBA!

Again, I hadn't notice and what a revelation it is. Do you have any more?
orangemagic Posted - 07/12/2006 : 14:15:37
I'm sure he knows because he's always doing stuff like that. He's quite mathamatical. I also love his rhyme schemes. Like instead of ABAB he'll often do stuff like ABBA.

Have you noticed this in "Atom in my Heart"?:

"Is your mind gone? Are you dog tired?" Notice the "I" sound of mind, followed by the "AH" sound of "gone". It is then reversed with the "ah" sound in "dog" followed by the "I" sound in "tired"

Same goes for:

"I'm a big guy. Can we try this?"
fbc Posted - 07/12/2006 : 14:07:02
Not me, and if it's true, it sounds pretty damn cool. Do you think fB knows he's done it?

1 down, 300 odd to go.
