Posted - 06/28/2006 : 22:44:23 Hello all,
I'm a long time viewer of these forums, but never posted (or even registered, as I just realised). I work for a wee magazine over in ye olde Australia and have somehow landed myself a Frank Black interview in 24 hours time. I am an obsessive Pixies fan - am less knowledgable about his solo work (though I love Teenager of the Year and will be obtaining a copy of his new one very soon) - so just wondering if anybody has any intelligent/non-hackneyed ideas for questions or conversation topics? I couldn't think of anything worse than getting on the phone and boring one of my heroes to death, you know.
cheers

Posted - 06/29/2006 : 23:21:40 Thanks for your help, people. Interview already done. He didn't say much about the work he's doing with EDF, other than that he's only written and demoed a few songs and his involvement will be similar to that of TOTY (producing/playing). i seem to remember just talking a whole lot of rubbish about time signatures after that. |

I don't think he's written a UFO song in years. It'd probably be best to avoid the topic!

I'd try asking Skatealex's question
Then try-- Do you plan our your music career song by song or do you see it more from album to album? Is it something that is thought of far in advance or is it just what inspires you at the moment?
Of FMRM what if any songs are inspired by Violet or parenthood?
What are your favorite qualities/traits in humans and what are your least favorite and why?
Was your childhood happy why/why not?

Would you ever collaborate with David Lynch if given the opportunity?
If you could collaborate with a "dream" group of musicians from any time who would you collaborate with?
Why have you kept your 85 Caddy for so long when you could easily could have afforded something new?
Is it true that the Pixies can't stand being around each other offstage? Why?
Does it weird you out when fans come up to you and say how much they love your music?
If you could get rid of one question fans ask you what would it be? |

Oslo, imagine the kind of crazy ass exposure it would've been. Isn't Shrek 2 right up there among top grossing movies of all time? Too bad. Honestly though, it's a pretty crappy song, in my opinion.

quote: BAM THWOK So we were rehearsing for these shows. And then Charles was at the airport leaving, so he calls me from the airport: The Shrek people just called the manager. They wanted to see if we want to do the song from the title sequence for Shrek 2. I go, "Oh, that sounds like fun." You know, Joey has a kid now and stuff. So Charles said, "I'll try and work up something in Portland, you guys try to work up something." And Joe has a Pro Tools studio in his basement, and he lives really close by, and me and him were getting Starbucks together. So I would just pick up the Starbucks and go to his house, to his basement. And he got the videotape of the title sequence that they wanted us to do. And Joe had done soundtacks, so he had a whole system. So I was playing Joe a couple things, licks, that I had. And there was one that he worked up, and when Charles had come down for something he listened to that. He had something, it was cute, I liked his, too. But David and Joe and Charles were all there and they thought mine was a poppier, more kid-friendly thing so we kinda worked it up a little bit in Joe's Pro Tools thing. And then the Shrek 2 people gave us some money to go into a demo place to demo it. So we did. And that demo is what's coming out [the iTunes-only single]. And they didn't take it.

Posted - 06/29/2006 : 11:42:43 If it's not too late, I would recommend treading lightly about the music if you don't know it too well. He seems to be annoyed when people try to pretend they're familiar with the music, or when they haven't done their homework beforehand.
Especially don't say something like "So you've got a new record coming out--or I guess it is out now, right?" You're liable to end up talking about sweaty testicles.

Posted - 06/29/2006 : 11:06:02 From what i remember this question was asked at the Pixies Music/FB.net meet and greet before the last Pixies show of 2004. FB had said something along the lines of that (i believe, this was a year and a half ago and i wasn't recording it) "Bam Thwok" was the only song recorded ('cept for the Warren Zevon cover) by the band thus far. Dean, Daisy? Help me out - am i making this up? Or was it from my ill-fated interview w/ FB from 2005 that got washed away when my apartment flooded?

Posted - 06/29/2006 : 10:48:54 I'm almost positive that if such a song exists, which even FB was a bit hazy on, it was not recorded, which i beleive the man himself confirmed in late 2004.
