it is funny to look at all the appreciation and world-wide admiration the pixies get now, more than a decade later when they broke up. "they were ahead of their time" is a bit of a dull phrase, since their music is classy and therefore timeless. but somehow it expresses their outstanding quality.
so i'm wondering, if FB's post-pixies phase will also be similarly acknowledged in the future. from my point of view (and most people around here will agree, i think) his solo/catholics stuff is in many ways *better* than the pixies songs. okay, "better" is a stupid word here, since everybody likes what he/she likes. maybe to say, the songs from his solo career have even more flesh and quality than the pixies-songs. in particular the his writing of lyrics has gone from very good to absolutely outstanding, imo.
for example, i just listened to dog in the sand - robert onion, st.francis dam disaster, the swimmer,... - the music, the lyrics, the ideas, the sound, the variety, the rock. and all recorded live to two track. holy shit!
so, my question is: will there be a time when more people will discover this ? if FB will go on a reunion tour with the catholics or perfirm his solo-songs, lets say in 5 or 10 years from now, will he be appreciated like the pixies have been the last 2 years ? what do you think ? i would say yes, he will become a figure maybe as *prominent* as bowie or so. but it will take some time.

i'm not as convinced. my theory is, that on long term, only quality matters. the pixies were a bit odd in their time too, and had their specialised audience. and the latter work of FB (maybe starting from dog in the sand or so) is somehow much more "conventional" than pixies. it follows more traditional rock structures (or at least sounds like that), but it additionally, it is...., well you know what i want to say.
and i think pixies are liked nowadays so much for the same reason. there is so much shit in music, and the songs just shine through, because they are just good and that is timeless. that's why i think FB will become a very much appreciated figure, just like bowie or neil young.

totally with you on that, found your analysis much more convincing that the previous. Funny how some fans here have so very little confidence on the protential success FB's music can have. Or is it just lame snobism?

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the "ahead of their time" phrase either. The Pixies might well be more popular now than ever, but I don't know that that means they would have been more popular if they'd just started out recently, which is what "ahead of their time" seems to imply. During the hiatus, there was lots of time for people to discover the band, and positive words from other musicians helped build up interest. Perhaps Leonardo da Vinci was ahead of his time, but the Pixies? I don't know about that.
As for whether Frank's solo and Catholics work will ever become super-famous, well, there's no way of knowing, but I tend to doubt it. The later stuff, especially, isn't really in a style that the general public usually digs. There also isn't the same level of hype that there is for Pixies stuff. Public opinion can change, certainly, but I get the feeling that Frank knows he's playing for a more specialized audience with his post-Pixies work.

The Pixies and Frank Black are continuous, really, Charles Thompson wrote pretty much everything The Pixies did! Some Frank songs are better than some Pixies songs, and vice versa. He should certainly become a legendary music figure over the years. He's already earned his stripes.
