By the way, Frank recorded a version of Dirty Old Town during the Honeycomb sessions (it was on the original leak which had tracks that didn't make it to the retail) and the Pixies also played it at their unplugged gig so for me this will be my third recrding of the song from Frank I've heard.

Jontiven |
Posted - 02/09/2006 : 04:33:45 Disc two is mastered. All the rockers we left off HONEYCOMB fit much better on this record, and methinks that FASTMANRAIDERMAN is not much like HONEYCOMB at all. I'm sure dyperman will have his copy soon enough and will be weighing in, but my bet is that among the fans, this album won't be nearly as controversial as the last. Of course, there will be those who say it's great, and those who say it's greater.......

Actually, this is the beginning of the week AFTER the next week in which you had originally posted the message. So it's been going on two weeks now.
But unless it's a way for us to pay to download the new album in order to get it in advance, or some other way to obtain the album faster, I honestly don't care what it is.

Anyone remember that radio show where Frank DJed? He picked Eve Of Destruction as one the songs, and he was saying he first heard it in an old movie. I can't remember what it was called.

Dear Velvety,
OK, here's one for you all to chew on.
I brought a dear friend of mine named Phil Sloan to you-know-who's birthday party in L.A. last year, Phil is also known as P.F. Sloan and writer of a bazillion great songs, one of which is "Eve of Destruction," a favorite of aforementioned you-know-who. I introduced the two greats to each other and in the back of my mind I hoped that it would spur some sort of collaboration in the future.
End of last year I convinced P.F. to make a new album, which I produced, which includes several old songs as well as a bunch of new ones. As I was doing it I was at the same time finishing off mixes of FASTMANRAIDERMAN, and corralled P.F. to sing harmonies on "Fast Man," which turned out beautifully.
You-know-who returned the favor by singing a couple of duets on P.F.'s record, one verse on "Eve of Destruction" and two on "Halloween Mary." We just finished the album last Wednesday and we're shopping for a record deal for it presently.
And when I went out to L.A. to record one of these duets, you-know-who said as long as you're coming to L.A. while I'm in L.A., let's cut a few more tunes.
I said, "You've got something written?"
He said, "I will have them by the session. Who do you know to play?"
I said "Let's get P.F. Sloan to play piano."
He said "Let's get Duane Jarvis to play guitar." (Duane had played on "Raiderman" and on the sessions a year before, and had impressed our man enough to ask for a return visit.)
So I called Phil Sloan and told him the good news and said who should we get to play bass. He immediate answered, "Carol Kaye."
I'm sure some enterprising FBfan will provide information about her, I'll just leave it that she's one of the all-time greats, a be-bopping wall of sounder with more credits than anyone I know including me. I called her, she was intrigued and recommended Jim Keltner to play drums.
I called The Man, he said fine, but I may want to record for two days. So I recommended my friend Steve Ferrone (who played on the original session that Frank Black and I started working together on--The Otis Blackwell Tribute---and is now with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers).
He said fine. I called Steve, he said count me in. So we have Keltner and Ferrone each on two tracks. Kaye, Sloan, Jarvis, and a pedal steel player our artist brought who y'all may be familiar with named Dave Phillips playing on all four. They're frickin fabulous.
bye, Jon Tiven

Nope, anyone so doing will be permanently banned without exception.
Sorry, but the reason I can allow that thread to exist is because it's non-commercial material.
But... to stave off the complaints, don't worry... we have something cooking for you right now that, with Brian's help (and some approval from above - i.e. Ken and/or FB), will be fresh off the grill by the end of next week.

Posted - 02/06/2006 : 13:19:23 Carol Kaye is a fantastic bass player and fantastic woman. I once took a bass workshop with her and she was great about fielding questions and being generally a sweet person.
She's played on so many records its sick, including a great deal of Phil Spector's 60s/70s work, many of the Beach Boys most famous tunes ("California Girls," "Good Vibrations") and the original SMiLE sessions.
