Heard an anecdote last week off of a fellow Pixies fan (yet to educate him to the wonders of solo Frank) who said that he'd read that in the early days of Frank developing his singing style, Frank was given the sage advice off of another band's (he seemed to think a fairly big one from the early nineties) singer, that the way to enhance his style was to always "sing it like you hate the bitch".

Anyone else heard, read about this or can offer any fuel to this wild rumour (though one that I quite like).

I have that issue of Record Collector somewhere.

So Frank was supposed to sing "Oh! Darling" like he hated a female dog? I've found that usually a stern "NO!" works better.

I think that the word "bitch" should be banned because of its sexist connotation. We should use "female dog" instead.

I think that the word "bitch" is very objectifying - girls shouldn't be blamed for loving sex.

Woohoo! It does mention "Oh Darling". Now please excuse me for a minute while I hug myself in an inappropriate way....

Does the fact that I was the first to reply (with actual info!) make me eligible for a possibly inappropriate hug?

I thought the story specifically mentioned Oh Darling as the song you were supposed to "scream like you hate that bitch".

Never heard it in all my years of devouring all things Pixies (or if I did I forgot it).

He was a cousin of the manager of a flower shop FB worked in. I saw his name mentioned before, can't remember what it is, though.

Who the hell is that? I have a guess. And a ticket to Frank Solo Education Camp.

A new colleague at work - I now work with a Pixies fan. I hugged him in a possibly inappropriate way when he told me the news.

I remember reading somewhere that he was a neighbor of Charles and he (the Thai dude) used to have a small recording studio in his garage and Chucky would go over and sing Beatles songs. Apparently that's when the "bitch" advice was given.

Wow - was not expecting such concise info so quickly. Thank you. I feel most fulfilled.

The guy was apparently a Thai rock star - I forget how the contact was made, maybe a flatmate? Its true, as far as I know, at least a very persistent rumour.

EDIT: see Jedi's response for a more factual approach.

It wasn't someone in a band, it was an Asian neighbour who had been something of a famous musician back in Southeast Asia (Thailand? I can't remember where he was from). Josh Homme mentions him (and gives his name, but I couldn't catch it...)in the BBC2 documentary that Jo posted about some time ago, and Dazin also makes a passing mention in his Pixies book.
