Posted - 10/02/2005 : 13:43:38 it's probably not that cool, but at the time i was sad enough to think "i'm gonna make a thread about this!" also i'll probably go into more back story than I need to, but whateverrr.
So... about 4 nights ago I met this girl called Lucy at the Union Bar through a flatmate who's on her course. After all the usual freshers' questions (What's your name? What course are you doing? Sorry, your name again? Where are you staying? ... What's your name?) we got onto the topic of music; our favourite bands, etc. Inevitably the Pixies came up and we discovered we both really liked them. She was pissed off I'd seen them three times and her not once, despite her being a fan for several years longer than me. Last night we met again, and she brang up Frank Black... she'd been round a guys house listening to some of Frank Black's tracks and one of her favourites was Honeycomb (the song)... I told her that yeah, I'm really into Frank Black's solo stuff aswell as the Pixies, and at the end of the night I nipped back into mine to grab Honeycomb so I could lend it to her.
And so tonight, we meet up in the bar again and she's brought the CD to give back to me (she went out and bought it for herself). Since she heard Honeycomb it's all she's been going on about. When we're still in the bar, she has the idea that she could persuade the DJ (it was a special pub quiz night) to play the track, pretending it was for someone's birthday (of course). Success! So, stuck in between all these generic chart songs, is Frank Black's Honeycomb... Wow. Everyone looks at us because we're the only ones singing along and swaying to the music. The song finishes... we go back to the DJ who agreed to play it and there's two people there, trying to found out who the song was by! We let them know and they both agree to check him out. We were like, yeah, converted two people. Cool.

Posted - 10/04/2005 : 15:04:18 Well, here's another story about spreading the word (albeit in a "lesser" way, perhaps). My mom and I have never really been able to sit around and talk about music the way my dad and I have been. She's really close-minded, is I guess what it boils down to. She likes some great stuff (The Who, Bob Dylan), but only because it's mainstream. It's always pained me that I could never introduce her to the music I love. Soooooooo... last Thanksgiving we were sitting around the kitchen and out-of-the-blue she asks me to put on something I listen to a lot. So I put on Black Letter Days... and she loves it! Next thing I know, the CD is missing. I can't find it for weeks. One day my mom walks into my room with this shamed look on her face and hands me Black Letter Days, and starts gushing about how much she loves it and how badly she was tempted to steal it forever.
Anyway, that was a beautiful moment. She's still talking about how much she likes FB!! Also, I feel like it's worth saying that the love of FB is behind me and my boyfriend (who recently bought me two FB cds for my birthday!!) getting together. Yeah, it's good stuff. |

Posted - 10/04/2005 : 01:23:15 Good story, Steve. The fact that the DJ played it isn't so impressive. The fact that he didn't stop playing it is - in a club in Canada, it would, shall we say, not be given a chance. Two new converts is great! I'm going to listen to it again right now.

Posted - 10/03/2005 : 22:05:52 On spreading the word: I teach high school. Before class begins, I play music as kids are coming into the room. Needless to say, FB and Pixies are at the top of my list. Most popular songs with the stuents are definitely "Whatever Happened to Pong?" and "Tame." I'm pleased to say that over the years, I've converted quite a few students into FB fans.
In my class, I also have a signed Catholics poster for all to see. It's right above my desk with all the other literary giants: Hawthorne, Melville, Shakespeare, and BLACK!

Posted - 10/03/2005 : 04:00:14 i know there's been a couple of threads about "spreading the word" (it sounds like us fans are a cult or something), but anyone got any similar stories they'd like to share?
