Posted - 10/11/2005 : 18:26:50 I love the heckler when Dave was doing his science show. I thought someone was really being a dick and then Dave shot this electricity from his body and the woman dropped to the floor screaming "damn your scorcery" I loved it each time I saw the show (probably four times). Off topic but did anyone hear FB's live, altered version of "Fiddle Riddle"? AMAZING. |

Ha! No, but there was some trick that had lightning shooting out of a pickle. |

Posted - 10/11/2005 : 13:53:00 i went to quite a few Catholics shows around that period (quite a few) and that one was in the upper eschalon. opening and closing with Black Rider..
before the show me, my girlfriend and my friend were driving up and saw Frank walking down the street. so, like an idiot, i said "hi Frank" and we waved at him. and he kind of gave us the leave-me-alone vibe at first, but then waved back ..
one thing i vividly remember about that show was this punk rock chick next to me throwing a pint glass in the air and hitting a guy in the face, who instantly started bleeding and had to leave the concert. anyone see that?
i also remember that venue for being the only venue i've ever been to where they had a waitress who actually walked out in the crowd (like, up in front) to take drink orders. every place should do that |

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 20:42:20 Unfortunately, that was the only time I've seen FB live (so far), so I have nothing to compare it to.
Did he do the splits while swallowing knives? No. Did he rock the hell out? Indeed.
That's a trip that we were all there. Cool...

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 20:14:29 So three of us were there that night? (floop ScottP and me?) Would you guys agree that Frank was very animated that night, really rocking as opposed to his usual statuesque posture? I seem to remember his really throwing down... |
ScottP |
Posted - 10/10/2005 : 20:10:00 He did a bunch of science gags. It was fun. |

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 20:01:42 Yeah, I heard about the magic show but missed it. What the hell did he do anyway? My friends were there before me and said something like, Hey the pixies drummer opened, and did some magic. I was a little cofused, but didn't doubt it. Didn't see Dave anywhere there, though I'm sure he was there watching... |

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 19:58:02 Frank Black humping gear, and Lovering doing a magic show. How can you beat that? |

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 19:33:07 Yeah, Dave and Frank as far as I noticed, (lots of beer that night) had the guitar on lock down. I remember frank really rocking out, wearing his cowboy shirt from the start up page of this site, and I remember scrambling and possibly rudely knocking people out of the way on my way back indoors from the smoke pit the second I heard "Don't worry, hey, no need for you to..." blasting from inside. Great night. Also, I think I might have ran my digits across the frets of the pedal steel featured on the cover of SMYT that was positioned that night precariously close to the edge of the stage... |

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 19:22:59 I would have humped his gear for him, but I already have a relationship with mine. Hey, Eric talked to us that night for about 10 minutes while the other guys were finishing up. He's a supercool cat.
If I remember correctly, Dave and Frank were the only guitarists that night. Is that right? |

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 19:19:27 Hey, if you love your gear... |

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 19:03:03 i was at that show ribcage.. we talked to EDF and Dave P after, but no Frankie for me.. that was a fucking great show |

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 18:56:38 People should stop talking about Frank 'humping' his own gear....he'll get a bad name!! ;) |

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 18:53:22 I've mentioned this in another thread, but I met The Man at a particularly fiery Catholics show in Solona Beach at the Belly Up Tavern in summer of 2003. I arrived late and friends of mine I'd talked into coming were already there. They had unknowingly drank beers with Frank earlier that night at the bar. These guys had no idea who FB was or Pixies for that matter, but when I showed up the were totally jazzed about the show thus far and bragged about drinking with frank, even though they had no idea... Anywho, when I met frank and the guys, they had come down to the foot of the stage after the place cleared out, and I had my copy of Devils Workshop on me, so I shook his hand and told him "Hey Frank, great set, man. Could you sign this for me please?" Yeah, pretty sad, but I wasn't expecting it. He was extremly gracious to all of us there swooning (well not really), and was still sweating, but smiling and happy. He signed the back of the liner, along with the rest of the band, and I of course still remember it as a high point, and hope I'll get to see him again sometime and maybe I'll show up early enough to buy him a beer!
Hey ScottP, I also saw him tote his own gear in and out the back door... great to see in a way, but also sad, since a man of FB's stature, and I'm not even talking music history here, humping his own gear. |

Posted - 10/10/2005 : 18:13:16 A couple years ago outside The Showbox in Seattle,(my first FB show)a couple of friends and I waited to see if we could get a chance to meet the man. Just as predicted, he emerged through the front entry wearing work gloves and shlepping his own gear. While the show itself was spectacular, watching Frank pack gear back and forth was nearly as surreal. After they finished, Frank got in the driver's seat of one of the vans with Dave Phillips ridin' shotgun. I went up to the window and he rolled it down. I tried to explain to him how important he was to me and everybody when he stuck out his hand, said thank you very much, and smiled. I felt stupid.
If I had one minute of Frank Black's undivided attention, I would thank him for using his time as an artist so perfectly. Not many have the oppurtunity to make music for a living and I think Frank Black has done it with terrifically original music, no BS, and classy grit. He's a great role model for aspiring young artists too. What's that?.....I have 6 seconds left? Oh,...ummm.....Thank you FB for "The Man Who Was Too Loud"!!! And Llano Del Rio!!! And Superabou |

So that explains the lyrics of Bullet..a bit!
BTW, hi Papa Shrimp-and kfs, too! |

Posted - 10/09/2005 : 07:43:48 Yeah, I've heard the same story about the guns. Frank's brother's name is actually Errol, though.

I don't know. Posts like yours are great. Funny too. I enjoy these more than answers to "what's your favourite colour?". |

Posted - 10/08/2005 : 20:50:08 Hmm. So there I was. At the Iota Club in something, something Virginia. Reid Paley had just gotten off stage and everyone was in line to use the ... potty. There was a line (like I said) and, as always, I was exhilerated at all my FB fan-kin. I struck up an arguement with some guy (there were drinks had in the two hours waiting for the show.) The argument, as I figured it, was something abstract, yet personal about Frank's style. The guy was adamant that I didn't know what I was talking about. Now, the Iota is a tiny club, and Frank was scheduled to play solo with a second string guitarist. In all candidness, it beat the crap out of seeing any FB show, even the Pixies reuinion (any Pixies reunion show) at some stadium event. Sparing the crust- the conversation went from the urinals to the floor of the bar, when. A round, bald guy walks up to us, a bit shorter than I ( not a tall fella myself,) That guy was Frank Black. I don't have to mention at this point that I'm a BIG fan of ... forever. So, when FB walked between and this dude I was arguing with and said "Hey Phil, glad you made it... You got the tickets?" I was half speechless, mostly stupified. "Yes, thanks Charles..." My reply was as stupid as "well you didn't tell me you knew him. That totally changes my argument." So that's the story.. Thanks for wading through it. Long posts are seldomly enjoyable. But here's the bonus. FB got on stage, sang a few songs, and then introduced a song like this "After my father died, I got a phone call from brother Earl. Earl said he was going through Dad's stuff and found some old guns in the attic. The only thing was was that each gun was loaded with one bullet only." Pardon the quotes, cause I don't remember what was actually said, but I got it all on Mini Disc. -I sing it very happily Papa Shrimp |

Posted - 10/03/2005 : 16:16:32 The one time I met FB was at Amoeba records for his mini concert and autographs for Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop. My friend and I were enjoying the show when all of a sudeen we found ourselves like 6th in line to meet FB. My mind raced cause I had this speech prepared about how much his music had meant to me through the years but especially his solo work which had heped me through some rough patches. When it was our turn all I could do was grin like a moron and hand him the CDs to sign. He was so nice and accommodating and my friend told him how we had seen 8 of his solo shows and he said he appreciated the support. He was so cool and I said Nothing. I knew it was about time to move on so I blurted out "it's great stuff" and ran for the exit. I laugh about it now, but at the time I was mortified. Didn't seem so funny back then! |

Posted - 09/30/2005 : 12:41:14 Ok...Here's the story about the time I met Frank Black. It was September 10, 2005 at Mercy Lounge in Nashville,TN. First, we saw him walking into the building with his guitar as we entered the parking lot (that seemed pretty cool at the time). Later, it was almost showtime and I bought a drink while my husband,Mark, went to the restroom. When I met back up with Mark he had a funny look on his face and said, "Look over there..." Frank Black himself was standing about six feet away!!!! I felt like a silly teenager! I asked him if I could have my picture taken with him and he said yes! He was very friendly. The only thing I said to him was "That's so cool!" Of course, I've thought of a thousand things I would like to have said since then...I'm such an idiot. Then Mark had his picture taken with him. Mark's a lot more outgoing than I am and they were talking like they'd known each other for years! Anyway, Mark thought he was friendly too. And then....I got to be at the very front at the stage during the show. It was a great show. Just the man and his guitar. I'll never forget that night! |
