I've been hearing that before the Pixies got back together Frank Black and The Catholics had been playing Pixes songs live. Does anyone know which songs they played?

Are you lookin' for the motherlode?

My DOG IN THE SAND is packed up in a box somewhere in my new apartment here (and I believe the exact recordings dates are noted in the booklet), but I'm inclined to say that this was before the album was recorded (I'm thinking of Frank's press release for DOG IN THE SAND where he talks about touring the songs in the winter of 2000, while playing Exile on Main Street and Blonde on Blonde in the van, prior to making the record).

For most of the show the band plays one familiar song and then one new song, alternating for the first 20 or so songs... until they run out of new songs and then just play familiar stuff. The version of "Abstract Plain" in this show is really great. The only DOG IN THE SAND songs not played are "Robert Onion" and "St. Francis". And again, no Pixies songs (a good thing, in my opinion).

The crowd is nice and quiet between songs. And the show is VERY well-recorded, very clear and unmuffled, so I'm inclined to think it has circulated quite a bit.

If I weren't a hopelessly analog person and was into the whole MP3-trading scene (I download about two MP3s a year), I would absolutely share it. Maybe if you made a request for it somewhere here where able sharers might see it, you could get it.

They did play Caribou a few times since late 2002. They started to play Velouria and Cactus around the same time.

Dancing The Manta Ray wasn't played so much. Just in 2001 I think, for the Dog In The Sand tour.

Looking for one of the shows they played just before dog in the sand came out--maybe even just after they recorded it...I saw them at THE MINT in LA and it was the best show I have seen him do--and most of the songs were new and never played before...it was great...went back the next night both shows were great...so something from that time period would be great if any one has something like that...

I don't know how to share MP3s. I also don't have a high speed connection. Maybe someone else here has the show. It was discussed a whole lot on the Abstract Plain list five years ago. If I have it, I bet a few others here have it.

What, exactly, are you looking for?

Yeah, I can confirm they played no Pixies in a 2000 show I went to. All sorts of Dog In the Sand though.

Then in 2001 was the first I heard him play Pixies material.

1. I am a fsh with no i's.
2. You must be wearing Zubaz, 'cause you're daring to be different.
3. I am a man with 3 fingers...but that doesn't count my index finger nor my thumb.

Would you be willing to share these shows debuting Dog in the Sand"?

When Frank and the Catholics first started playing Pixies songs in 1998, the only two they did for awhile (for about a year maybe) were "Wave of Mutilation" (UK Surf tempo) and "Holiday Song".

Then throughout the later part of 1999 and beyond there was a slow trickle of more Pixies songs added to the repertoire. After the first two, I have no idea in what order the songs were added, but I think "Cactus" was only added after David Bowie's cover was being publicized (though maybe I'm wrong about that).

There were some Frank Black & the Catholics shows that featured no Pixies songs. Five years later, I still have on my hard drive a show spread among the Abstract Plain mailing list in the summer of 2000 where the band debuted almost all of the songs that would end up on Dog in the Sand (and played a bunch of other Frank solo/Catholics stuff) and there are no Pixies songs in that set.

They definitely did Crackity Jones numerous times.

Jason, they also did Velouria for sure a few times in the UK (fall '03?); I have a low-quality recording of one of these.

I don't believe I've ever heard a Catholics version of Caribou, my favourites to hear with them were Mr. Grieves and Nimrod's Son - they just lit these songs up!

Nothing is ever something.

They also played Velvety Instrumental Version.

The very first Pixies song "they" played was Wave of Mutilation I heard like a voice from outta-spaYce on the Cult of Ray tour in England 1996...
