Posted - 09/21/2005 : 10:06:01 this recent pistolero discussion has really got me listening to it again.
it's the only album (out of the main 10) that i don't own (legally)... i had TOTY and Yellow, and after SMYT i decided to buy all the rest in one go... but i think i had some difficulty getting pistolero, so i just downloaded and burnt it... maybe one day i'll buy it properly.
i also wrote a bit of a song once that was two chords and a melody that was basically the same as the "now he's heading skyward..." bit. must have been listening to it on a subconscious level, bbecause at first i didn't pay much attention to this album.

there must be pistolero in the air.
What a great albumn, and western star is so stylish. The way the chorus comes right in, almost on top of the verse, is full throtle.
I actually came to pistolero at the same time as Dog in Sand. For one reason or another, I couldn't get my hands on a copy. I was talking Frank with a friend who loaned me his copy. I felt like a fool for not having it sooner.
yea for some reason Pisolero goes with Dog in the Sand like Peas in the Pod!!! I love these albums!!!
Ya, know, I think sometimes Frank is a little critical about some of his own work, but I can't find a single album he's touched that isn't brilliant.

Posted - 09/15/2005 : 14:00:37 Again, I have to compliment this album.
Jeff, the fools are the ones who don't even know Frank Black's music exists.
Before I cottoned onto the Jonathan Richman theme in The Man Who Was Too Loud, I was really excited to hear the next album. Not wanting to rock out as loud I took to mean as FB wanting to slow things down. Chill out a little like he has eventually done with Honeycomb. But from the very first bass drum 'thud thud' on Pistolero, all my doubts about lack of rock more roll were banished.
And Pistolero left me with no doubts about the Catholics sound. The Pixies had their signature sound, so to FB solo (quirky). The new sound in town is Frank Black and the Catholics and I loved what I was hearing.
Again, Frank Black is the man whichever direction he decides to go. |

Posted - 09/15/2005 : 06:55:34 Yet again Bill, you sure know your Frank. A heavy album in comparison to the Catholics later work. And all the better for it. |

Posted - 09/15/2005 : 06:22:20 Pistolero was my first Frank record, I hadn't heard all pixies records yet, but I just wanted to know what the ex-leader of that old band I was getting into sounded like. From that day on, I can't hear a difference between quality of his songwriting as Black Francis or Frank Black. It's all topnotch stuff! I love your Brain, now that's some heavy pop!

Remember the good old days?
Not only the good ole days, but I remember the exact day this pic was taken. My first Frank gig after 5 years. I nearly died.

You were there?! Please share every detail and memory NOW!
Got back from Mexico after 3 years, CRAVED for a Frank Black gig, went on a road trip with my wife, discovered Frank was playing at the Route du Rock festival 5 miles from where we were, bought tickets, got stuck in traffic, missed half of the show, and then in the setting sun, 5 years after my first Frank experience ('96 in Paris), the Catholics graced my ears with their Mighty sound. I remember them playing Brackish Boy and Mr Grieves. A couple of hours later I ran away screaming in terror as Muse took the stage and played an unlistenable mess.

I hardly listen to Pistolero anymore, but this thread made me want to re-listen to it once more. And even though I still find the 'album' inconsistent, I really found myself missing the more rocking side of Frank. Songs like 'Tiny heart', 'Western Star', 'I love your brain', 'Billy Radcliff' or 'So.bay' have so much energy in them, damn it, I need to hear that again. And even though I never really was a fan of Rich Gilbert's guitar work, most of that chaotic mess he does really adds to these songs. 'Tiny heart' and 'I want rock & roll' especially, are freakin' awesome. And I wonder if 'I think I'm starting to lose it' would have been in Surfer Rosa's tracklist, if it wouldn't be considered a classic, like 'Broken Face' or 'Something against you'. How can one not get goosebumps when Frank screams "I think I'm starting to looooooose it, I think I'm starting to looooooose it..." Maybe that's why I really hope to hear a new Pixies album. That'll have to be a rockin album, right? I wouldn't mind an album worth of waltzes, though.
Word! I agree with everything you wrote.

let us take a moment on this busy day to note how fucking cool McDave's little mews are at the end of Western Star. They just cap off that most amazing song.
Does anyone not like the mews? When I first heard them, I thought they were really annoying and totaly out of place. The second time I didn't mind as much, for I knew they were coming, and I prepared myself.
Sorry, what? Huh? Obviously you are not a heterosexual woman, Ice Cream.
