Lyrics

Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day

When there's nothing left to say
And all the clouds have faded away
And my mind wanders out there across the bay
Just to be there in the mornin'
With the sun comin through the trees
Well you know there ain't no place I'd rather be

Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day
You can feel the magic in the air
And when it's over and the clover has left the mountainside
You'll be king of what you survive

La la la la...

Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day
You will have a wonderful time up there
Yeah, when it's over and the clover has left the mountainside
You'll be king of what you survive

La la la la...

I've been obsessed with this song ever since I first heard it five or six years ago. I've driven other musicians crazy by the number of times I've had them play it in rehearsal or in a set. Of course, the original version by Doug Sahm is still the best. It's greasy and hard and wonderful. I tried to do it his way for so long and I just couldn't pull it off. But even though he was a really gritty Texas character, with a lot of soul, the song is actually very light and beautiful, so we decided to do it like that. And the guys in the band totally got it. It was like nothing to them. It was almost like they were playing a 12-bar blues --- and a 12-bar blues this ain't.

If you invite people who all have the same blood type to a party, but you don't tell them, they'll talk about something else

2. Frank Black, "Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Grove Day."
From his 2005 Honeycomb release. Frank Black recorded
this in Nashville with an A-Team including Steve Cropper,
Spooner Oldham, and Dan Penn, and although there are
times when the record lacks the cohesion one gets from a
practiced unit (listen for it on this tune - the song, a stone
cold groove in the hands of Doug Sahm, is a bit stiffer here),
there are some fine moments. Honeycomb includes two
covers ("Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day" and the
Penn/Chips Moman classic "Dark End of the Street"), a
cleaner, rawer, more direct vocal treatment (none of the
Pixies reverb) and Black's always unique songwriting.

Frank in Uncut sometime in 05 on why he cut "SSMVGD" for HC:

"Just fell in love with the song when I first heard it. Obsessed on it, drove my band the Catholics insane playing it over and over and over, recording it for like four different records but never getting it right. I just really love the song and the lyrics. 'You’ll be king of what you survive.' "

I got some heaven in my head

i used to wonder why FB sung "sur-vi" instead of "survey" (as in 'all you can survey')
and if Doug Sahm sang it the same

now i know they did'nt even sing it in the first place. stupid me! singing lyrics all wrong. again!

I like this song a lot. :) I think I have heard the original... but I would love to hear it again and compare. It's a beautiful song and Frank's La's are just heavenly.

Was originally included on SUNDAY SUNNY MILL VALLEY GROOVE DAY
SSMVGD refers to an unreleased set of ten tracks that Frank recorded with the Catholics in San Francisco in 2000.

Great idea to refer to the tabs, Tre!

Mill Valley is a town in Marin County, across the bay from San Francisco. It was a hippie hub in the 60s (over the years a couple of members of the Grateful Dead lived there) but now it's an upscale suburb.
