Posted - 07/22/2005 : 12:11:19 ..But Honeycomb is just terrible. It says a lot about the album when the best song is Song Of the Shrimp. I can't believe the zealousy in this forum, overhyping such a sub-par album, just because it's "The Man"
Just a few years ago he was in his songwriting prime, writing songs alongside great musicians, now he's playing bad covers of his own songs from 15 years ago with the Pixies, and putting out these lackluste, tame songs as seen on Honeycomb.
His voice just isn't aging very well at all. Is it time to count out the possibility of another truly great album like we saw just a few years ago?
Oh, and don't bother with replies like "If your not a Frank Black fan, don't listen to the music." I am a fan, I'm just not deaf. I imagine this will be a a refreshing change among the sickingly blind views I have seen in every other thread in the forum. |

Posted - 07/26/2005 : 17:42:46 I am so stoked someone started this thread. I was actually really disappointed when I got the album. I had not downloaded (not because it was wrong, but because i could never find it online) but I had been counting the days to its release and reading every little blurb I could about it. I figured with the line up of musicians it was going to be a lot more country sounding. When I first heard it I really thought it sucked.
That being said i have still been listening to it and it has grown on me, I dunno it just has not lived up to its hype for me. That being said I still think the guy is one of the most prolific songwriters of all time.
Just wanted to put my 2 cents in. |

Posted - 07/26/2005 : 13:56:54 Tell you what,
I think this album is a grower. I got it off itunes the day it came out and I just had to shrug incredulously. WTF was this! Then I went on a lone 4 hour drive out to the cottage, through lakes and winding roads at dusk, happened to put on HC at magic hour with the windows and sunroof open, and BAM! I got it. Just take it for what it is and relax with it. Or not. Whatever.

Posted - 07/25/2005 : 04:58:59 Interesting post, I have to say from the raving in the forum I was expecting a masterpiece when Honeycomb flew through the letterbox last week and landed straight into the CD tray (well, it got there so fast it may as well have).
All I know is personally never to judge a frank black album before at least a hundred listens. I made a terrible, terrible error with dog in the sand for which I now pay for with a permanent review on amazon ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004UFTM/qid=1122292249/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_10_1/202-3413362-8870237 ).
I have to say Honeycomb is a strange mix. The first time I heard 'I burn today' it was beautiful, and still is, but I think 'Shrimp Song' and 'Sunday Sunny...' were far better off as rarities (how can you better the glen hansard duet???). They just seem too forced. But give me a week and I may be singing a different tune (metaphorically speaking, I hope).

I haven't listened to disc one of FBF. Really. Nimrod, check out disc 2, you can't dislike Caribou and WIMM. They're amazing. Only Frank can cover Where Is My Mind and make it great.

I think they stopped at their top, Honeycomb is a new way and I think it's great. One thing that's so wonderful about Frank is that he changes his way once in a while, that keeps his music fresh. If you don't like it, wait a few years and it's likely he will do a marimba-techno album or something. Can't wait

Posted - 07/22/2005 : 21:52:52 I feel Honeycomb is a another album in FB's evolution, and exactly what some of us need to hear. I know it's cliched and kind of sappy, but SMYT came out the same time I was separated from my wife and it helped me see what was important. If SMYT was about regret, and sorrow, then Honeycomb for me is coming through the other side. As much as I love the Pixies (Lord knows I do), FB's solo work speaks to me much more so in my advanced age. |

Posted - 07/22/2005 : 16:58:27 I was critical of Honeycomb for a long time and thought that Frank had lost it with this album.... but now and after a large number of listens I am growing to love this album. I think its difficult to compare it with his other albums because its so different but I am starting to really like it. There are a couple of songs that don't do anything for me tho.

The balance of power has shifted!
I have to say I was kind of surprised by how good Honeycomb was. I mean, I wasn't expecting not to like it, but most Frank albums take a while to grow on me. While there are some Honeycomb tracks that definitely fall into the "grower" category, there were quite a few that I liked pretty much immediately. Indeed, I might say it's the most instantly likeable Frank album since DITS. I think I already like it more than SMYT. Only time will tell what I think of it after it ceases to be the New Album, but I have to say that I like it. And I wouldn't have been afraid to say I didn't like it, if such had been the case.
Speaking of disliking, I don't care for the Frank Black Francis remix of "Planet Of Sound" at all. So there.
I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied. |
