Something has intrigued me throughout all of the promotion for this record. It is constantly shown as "Frank Black records for the first time with these Nashville cats." And that, for the most part is true.

HOWEVER

There are commercially available recordings of Steve Cropper with Frank Black ("Breakthless" on the Otis Blackwell tribute) and with FB playing with Spooner Oldham (both tracks on the Arthur Alexander tribute), both of which also mark collaborations with Jon Tiven. Mr. Tiven is always credited with having a working relationship w/ FB before the record, which is true, but Mr. Oldham and Mr. Cropper are usually presented as having just met FB during these sessions, which leads me to 2 conclusions:

1) Either FB's vocals were not recorded with either performer on the JT-produced tribute albums and therefore they never actually met/played togehter or

2) For reasons either journalisticly subpar or just general forgetfulness, this has not been brought forward. I don't feel like FB and co would have any reason to hide this, so perhaps this is just lackluster reporting.

If Mr. Tiven is around, could you shed some light on this subject?

number 8!! that's great news... thanks for stopping by Jon.

excelent point Broken Face. Usually journalists might read a press release...most would search their publications' data base for past revews... even fewer would do ouside research. That's speaking for the average journalist... so there are exceptions

Terrific news about "I Burn Today." I know a lot of folks on this site have a hand in that.

Tracks were cut for those albums without the singers present, so they never met before these sessions. Frank Black was an overdubber, as were all of the singers on my tribute albums, for the most part. That's the way those records work.

And I might add with all due excitement that "I Burn Today" has jumped to #8 on the CMJ triple A chart, and is getting a tremendous amount of airplay on 122 stations (up from 71 last week).

So please continue requesting airplay, thank you.

bye,
Jon Tiven, silently lurking
