Yeah, TOTY hits everyone instantly. And I actually started a topic entitled 'Pistelero Is A Grower' ages ago. But it's still a hard album to love!! |

Posted - 06/12/2005 : 06:58:39 I loved the first half of the orange album straight away, but thought the second half didn't keep up with the same pace upon the first listen.
It only took another 1 or 2 listens before I saw the way, and I now think the second half is twice as good as the first. |

Posted - 06/12/2005 : 00:03:50 I didn't "get" Massif Central at all on the first few listens, the falsetto parts sounded wrong. One day I was driving in my car playing SMYT really loud and suddenly Massif Central made me jump out of my skin. It didn't grow on me, it was a revelation!
Everytime I go round here is my fave FB grower.

After Scotch, Red Wine, and then back to Scotch: Devil's Workshop, BLD, SMYT
[from FB.net's song database: "SMYT"]
Directions from The Man "May I suggest a single malt scotch, straight up, as an aperitif? Then drink cold, red wine throughout, and then forget about the digestive; put the record on again and go look for that bottle of scotch. You're never going to like one of my damn records if you only listen to it once. Man, it is freezing around here."

Growers: Two Spaces. God, I love that song so much. |

Posted - 06/10/2005 : 13:20:08 Hmmm... Most of the Dog in the Sand songs are growers, except for If It Takes All Night - that's an instant classic. Songs like Los Angeles, Czar, Ten Percenter... I fell in love with those immediately. Adda Lee and Two Spaces are good examples of growers. For example. |

Black Letter Days (2002) or Show Me Your Tears (2003). Imho SMYT is more inspired but it lacks homogeneity.

Posted - 06/09/2005 : 17:52:27 "King And Queen Of Siam" was actually a grower for me.
As far as instant classics go, I'd say most of DITS was, except maybe "I'll Be Blue." And I'm still not a big fan of "Hermaphroditos."

Posted - 06/09/2005 : 10:37:14 The biggest grower Frank ever made, at least for me, is Pistolero, and the biggest grower as a song is "Western Star." If it only sounds like a decent album at first, listen to it about twenty or thirty more times and I promise you'll think, like me, that it's possibly the greatest straight-forward rock and roll album of all time (although Love You by the Beach Boys is pretty close behind).
