Since there's a thread on underrated songs, I might as well start this one.
I can't really think of any Frank solo/Catholics songs that I would consider overrated, but, in terms of Pixies material, I think "Tame" and "Gouge Away" might be. I like them, but I think they get too much attention when compared to other, better Pixies songs.

I do like the Doolittle version more than the surf version of Wave. I sometimes get bored listening to the surf version. Neither would make my top 20 either though.

Meanwhle, I often think of Alison as the most influential song in terms of sound the Pixies ever wrote -- its like the rosetta stone for a lot of mid-90s alternative rock (Weezer's entire career, not that I'm knocking Weezer, at least the first album). |

Wow, this is a shocker! Barleycorn is one of the great FB rock songs, in my opinion. The man flexing his Stax muscles, embracing rock n roll and saying 'I believe in its power to save my soul!'
But I can certainly see how it could be interpreted the way its critics here are saying.
LOVE the sax, love the break down and rejoining back with the simple snare fill. Just love it. Clearly the most 'accessaible' song on the album, but that is half the reason I love it. And I love any song with a call-and-response kind of springsteen shout. HEY!

there's just something about it. the fucking sax, the lame/tame guitar solo/sound... i don't know for sure. it might just be the song itself, because i heard that acoustic version with billy block and STILL didn't like it. if it's not the song itself, then the only thing i can think of is frank's voice on it. maybe if he sang it differently... i don't know.

And it really makes me think to The Ballad of Peter Pumkinhead, both the chords and the lyrics. "Give him a cheer - yeah" that part is also in Partridge's song! It's: "Hurray for Peter Pumkinhead - Yeah" !!!! |

to be honest, los angeles is kind of run of the mill to me. i love it, as i love all fb songs (except for that fucking johnny barleycorn), but it's the ending that makes it for me, not the rocking intro.

Ima fuckup and in the wrong thread as well. But you guys are right that the stanza of Chip Away Boy is just about worth everything and anything.
I don't agree with Superabound & So Hard to Make things out being overated.
Relatively speaking of course, myownpersonaloverated might include, Los Angeles, Headache, Monkey Gone to Heaven. Ummmm..... others?

I dont know what it's about but I allways feel an ambiant like the movie DEAD MAN. Could be Jodorowski too.
I wonder if Frank has seen Dead Man. It's the movie I would imagine him to direct. |

If it weren't for the intelligent discussion this thread would be really boring.
"I like it"/"How can you like it?
"I don't like it"/"How can you not like it?"
I love it but Silver's a b-side IMO. I suppose the swapping of instruments makes it a band/album moment. Could have easily swapped it for Into The White but maybe that would have made Doolittle too good. Western Star's fantastic and a great live moment and it's chorus drives hard. Speedy Marie's the one that I never rated so highly.

this is my favorite song; you can't go wrong with a diddy that has the phrase "cul-de-sac kampong" in it or better yet the dynamite duo of "freon bingo".
i even like the chorus, although i guess you would not call it the highlight of the song. |

I know a lot of people love Western Star, and I wouldnt insult them saying it's overrated, but I really dont get it at all. I'll give it a last oportunity when I listen to the best of. |

"Within you without you" is one of my favourite Pepper tracks... sure beats most of the McCartney ones. Not "Fixing a hole", though. And "A day in the life" is untouchable.
I like "Silver" as well. Doolittle was the first Pixies album I heard, and I was actually underwhelmed. A few good songs, but many others sounded like throwaways. It wasnīt until I heard the mega-brilliant first side of Bossanova that I got back and started to discover Doolittle. It was the tracks on the second side that opened up the album for me, those tracks that I thought were throwaway tracks... "La la love you", "Crackity Jones", "Hey", "Gouge away" - and "Silver". Doolittle would definitely be a more one-dimensional album without it.

First, thanks for the Breeders demos. Great stuff.
I have TONS of trouble with Honeycomb and FMRM, yet, I am now totally obsessed with the acoustic version of Raider Man, esp. the WOXY version. I play it over and over and can't get it out of my head, but when I play the FMRM version, I HATE it. It's all in the phrasing of the main riff, the 'stompy' version as FB does it on acoustic, compared to the 'jazzy' version on the record.
Has there ever been a song that you disliked originally, but then came to love in an alternate version/live version?
Did FB every do a studio version of COMING INTO LOS ANGELES? I have two live versions and love them. |
