ola people!
The first time I heard Frank solo was on BBC Radio 1 'round about 1996(?) when he was doing an acoustic set.
I can't tell you what the song was or what else he played but it was certainly, er, strange.
Then I was listening to The(late)John Peel show when he played Thalesocracy.Man I was blown away.Got TotY the next day..

Well, I heard "Here Comes Your Man" when it was out but it didn't sink in, AT ALL. The Pixies more or less came and went for me - I was heavy into They Might Be Giants and Genesis. Still am. But then I saw the video for "Headache" and fell in love. Got Teenager of The Year, found out about The Pixies, got everything at once from Columbia House, and slid righ into "Cult of Ray". Best music I have ever heard.

when i got TOTY, so i guess whatever happened to pong was the first song. this was probably about 2 years ago.

trying to think if i heard anything before, but no i don't think so.

the whole first time thing for me is ahh... how you say?.. cherry?
anyhoot, i was in a mall in Denver, and this guy out of the blue comes over to where i was sitting, puts his hand out for a shake and says "hey there friend".
i did'nt shake this strangers hand but he asked to sit anyway.
and so he sat, to my left i think as i remember and began a sort of, well for me anyway a rather painfull Q & A , mostly on the subject of music.
foggy storie short, he drained me, left me feeling stupid, period.
i was a kid who thought he knew enough, things have changed.
this was nine years ago, i did'nt have a clue as to what Frank Black (Charles) looked like, i missed the whole pixies thing i guess, went right over my head.
the first time i heard Frank Black?
DAMN.

Yeah, the first time I listened to Frank was '93 in the parking lot of a Mattress King, My wife and I were getting into the car after shopping for a mattress for our first house that we had just bought, and when I turned on the car, the radio was on (WRVU, college (Vanderbilt) radio) and it was about 1/2 way through Los Angeles. I knew the Pixies had broken up (saw them Jan '92 at Memorial Gym), however I hadn't heard anything from The Man since then. But when I heard the voice singing on Los Angeles, and I listened to the chorus, I knew who it was, I knew it was The Man. Needless to say, I got his debut solo album the next day. After the first few listens, Los Angeles and Parry the Wind became my favorite, and Every Time I Go Around Here and Don't Ya Rile Him sounded like sweet love songs to me.

I was 19 and got Frank solo and the Pixies all at the same time courtesy of an ex who gushed and gushed about it, he said you have to listen to this, it really will blow you away and I was all yeah yeah because it's a major turn off most of the time when people do that, but I was wrong, and it was amazing and have loved both in equal measures since then.

Yeah, me too. "You had so many problems, and then your friend told you to listen to his walkman. You really liked it a lot and..."
endofmiles Posted - 03/25/2005 : 17:09:53
I was 15 and waiting for the train. A friend had a walkman with a mix of Pixies and he said "you have to hear that!!". And a live version of Isla de Encanta came into mi ear. This was so in my face. Pixies splitted a few months after that, so I couldn't wait to hear Frank solo. And here I am now with 29...

The first Pixies I heard was the Planet Of Sound CD Single, with Theme From NARC/Build High B sides, from my brothers collection. I was then intrigued, but got Joey Santiago and Black Francis confused for quite a while as his voice sounds Latin/Mexican/Spanish somehow, and the only picture I saw of the band had no names printed and Joey looked Mexican. Well, they weren't exactly on Tops of the Pops every week!

Of course, I was then looking out for them touring in the UK, but to no avail. U2 carpet munchers.

My first non-Pixies, Frank experience came about two or three years ago, after purchasing the entire Pixies catalogue, and not satiating my need for good music, I went out and bought TOTY. Toom me a few weeks to get my head around it, but when I did, there was no looking back.

Are you honest when no one's looking? Can you summon honey from a telephone? They sat there with their hooks in the water and their mustaches caked with airplane glue.

I still have the tape I made of BBC Radio 1's preview of 'Frank Black' -- Old Black Dawning, Czar, Hang Onto Your Ego and Ten Percenter I believe -- a few weeks before the album came out. The huge swagger of Czar and 10%'er in particular gave me a massive ego boost at the time and I couldn't wait for the album itself to come out.

As for the Pixies, it was a 30 second blast of Debaser heard on someone's mix tape around the time of Bossanova that got me hooked.

My friend Dave stopped by with a tape of
Surfer Rosa, which had just come out,
and he insisted we stop what
we were doing and give it a listen.

Now how to describe the feeling? You know the
feeling....I was blown away.

Jeezo was I glad to get it back.
Never lending it out again.

I think it was around '89-'90, my brother was playing Doolittle and my ears perked up when I heard it playing...I can't remember which, It may have been Debaser or Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Wave Of Mutalation or I Bleed or something, take your pick, really, because I can't remember. Then I recall sitting in my room drawing, I was about 13, and I listened to the whole album. Some of it seemed a bit less immediate than the obvious, catchy songs, and I probably did'nt really start getting into them for a while after that. But Once I got hooked, I was really HOOKED!! The first Frank Black I heard was Los Angeles, when I bought his debut album. It took a few listens to really get into, (Ramona grabbed me, first time, I think, and probably a few others), and my friends were'nt keen on it, but I remember really anticipating his next release. TOTY took a while to come out after that, I remember a friend mentioning there was a free tape with a magazine or something, with 'Freedom Rock' on it, and I was real excited he had a new album out! (Heehee!!)

I can't really remember. I know I heard "Sir Rockaby" on Radio TMBG, back when that existed.

Olá Jag,
The first time I heard Frank Black solo was in a party at my house, a friend of mine that knew that I liked vey much the Pixies brought a tape and told me to listen, and there was Toty played for me the very first time, there's no need to say that I loved it so much that he gave me the tape.

In 1992 on a 12 hour car ride to Winnipeg my brother made a mix tape which had 4 or 5 songs from Trompe that he played over and over again. When we got back home I borrowed Surfer Rosa and that was that.

In the backwater were I grew up, for a couple of years I was a unique Pixies fan unknowing that the lead singer went his way, had a solo career and had already released 2 albums. When I knew that fact I bought the first Frank Black album I could find in a town were you have 2 discshops...
That was 'The Black Sessions' (French black case edition).

The very first song I heard from Frank Black was this very nice live version of '2 Spaces'... the rest is ...well, present and future I guess.

I'm a regular kid!

It took me three months of searching to find an imported copy of the first Frank Black cd at a local record store.(I wonder if internet record stores existed back then)I have been into the Pixies for three years before and couldn't wait to hear Frank's solo album. The song which knocked me over on the first listen was Czar. After a few listens I was hooked to every song on the album.

My friend AKA Speedy M had just really gotten into Trompe Le Monde (the song) and insisted on playing it for me whilst taking a trip in his car downtown. And then he made me a Pixies mix. And then he played me Freedom Rock at his place some day and I said, "I need more of this". And then he made me a Pixies/Frank mix, and I said, "Why didn't you give me the Frank stuff first!? This is awesome!".

I liked the Pixies stuff, but I've always liked FB's solo stuff better.

That man has introduced me to some good stuff over the years - before Frank I'd given up entirely on any remotely modern music being any good and listened exclusively to classical and 'oldies' like Neil Young, Led Zep, etc. Thank goodness for indie rock!

Hang on to your Taco!

the first listen to FB was "Los Angeles", straight away from his long-awaited debut album. man, it was great ! a terrific song to start a solo-career, especially when you have to carry the burden of the pixies.

I'd heard only Pixies until I was in the Barbican Music Library in London doing some research. I picked up TOTY and TUO/YA there, and never looked back.

I think the very first time I heard FB was on a compilation tape a friend had made. The same friend who turned me onto the Pixies. i think I was still playing catch up with the P's back catalogue when Men In Black came blaring out my speakers. I loved it from the very first listen. That riff at the beginning still gives me chills, and the way Fb brings it back in the middle of the song....wow! I've been told i use this word too loosely, but this is Frank Black i'm on about.....genius.
