Posted - 03/17/2005 : 16:15:20 maybe it's because of my age, I'm 16, but I have never heard Frank Black's music before. My ex bf used to be a big Pixie fan, but I never took to their music. I still don't care to listen to them. But I heard him listening to the song 'Fu Manchu' and I thought it was great! I asked him what it was, and he mumbled something aobut Black's solo music being 'sub par' ... I went out recently and purchased all the Black albums I could find. My favorites: Fu Manchu, fun song. Love it! St. Francis Dam Disaster: very moving, this is a great one!Brought a tear to my eye the first time I heard it. The Snake: I get the feeling this isn't a fan favorite but I think it is really cool. Sounds like Lou Reed but I just like the feel and energy of it. End of Miles and pretty much the entire Black Letter Days album: wow ... that's all I can really say. My favorite album of what I've heard so far. Any other suggestions I would be open to. I'd like to know what your favorites are. Also, do you think there is a rift that exist between Pixie fans and Black fans?

Posted - 03/24/2005 : 12:21:27 I commend you, Goddess, for having excellent musical taste at such a relatively young age. You can look at your peers who are into the schlock crap like nu-metal and poster punk bands (utter image over substance) and pity them, knowing that you have scaled the mountaintop...and it is goooooooooooooood |

hey, thanks. That was a bad recording but I htink it's pretty cool. I also downloaded something from the internet album but it is really informal. I read in one of the forums that there are a few of these songs that were from an interview that Black did over the net |

hey Goddess, the song is called 'Draw Attention', and there's another one from the session called 'Silhouette' the recording is pretty shitty like it was done by BF on a cheap 4-track
my hair costs eighty dollars
you can't turn down my tender collar
skin can't help but want these lips
eyes can't help but watch these hips
and when i do preach
you can't touch me, i'm way outer reach
and when i do preach
you gonna draw, attention
you gonna draw draw, attention
i'm gonna draw, attention
gonna draw draw, draw draw, attention i will

the pre-pexies songs has something to do with an '18 dollar haircut' any clues? |

Posted - 03/18/2005 : 20:43:26 If you like his solo work you'll no doubt like Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde. In my opinion they are the best albums the pixies put out, but I am in the minority.

I'd love to help you identify that pre-Pixies Frank tune. Can you post it somewhere or post the lyrics.
Basically, we're all here to help.

Posted - 03/17/2005 : 23:05:30 So what are some of the cooler Pixies songs, because I love 'break my body' but then their other stuff ... well, sugary pretty much sums it up for me as well!
I just think when I heard Frank Black it just sounds like no bull rock and Americana. I know alot of people my age who love the nu-metal and poser punk groups, but I'll listen to Zepelin or the Who over New Found Glory any day. I like Black's chord changes, the ufo themes and odd lyrics, but even without all of that it's still pretty great. I can't understand what's up with all the lackluster reviews. |

Posted - 03/17/2005 : 22:57:54 i got "turned on" to the pixies w/ surfer rosa in early 89 months after 'surfer rosa' tore up the local college radio station...mostly the single "gigantic" played to a degree enough to not make me wanna turn off my rhcp or etc. for that whiney pop crap. it didnt help much that my next exposure to them was months later in 89 with "here comes your man" getting sugar all over my stereo speakers to a pukish extent. well, that single really got a ton of my friends and i ended up having to hear surfer/doolitte a ton...and to my suprise, the stuff they WERENT playing on the radio was some really killer stuff. i was a huge fan from there on. though not a board favorite, 'bossanova' i REALLY loved.
when frank's solo album came out i gave it 3-4 spins then tossed it in the "seldom listen" cassette pile...needless to say, i wasnt very impressed and thought it lacked direction.
dunno why, but i picked it up one day when i was just sick of everything and i finally realized the thing that was putting me off was how different the album was compared to everything else around on whole...one of the reasons i liked some acts like "carter usm" and a few "wolfgang press" albums of the early 90s...they were kinda fresh. quirky, but fresh.
TOTY...well, yeah, that was a masterpiece that still gets regular play. Cult of Ray kinda lost me...it was short, it felt disjointed in structure no matter how many times i gave it a spin...and the catholics first album i wasnt mentally ready for at the time..."pistolero" really brought me back in hardcore. who knows what's next...well, we know what's next...but what about after that? and then after that? 2028...roadtrip...frank black live @harrahs in las vegas. |

Posted - 03/17/2005 : 21:05:56 hey guys, thanks and hi to everyone! Yeah, I have heard a few people say that 'teenager of the year' is one of if not his best album. I really like Vanishing Spies alot but haven't heard much else from it. I also downloaded a pre-pixie song recently, don't have the faintest idea what this is!! |

Posted - 03/17/2005 : 17:53:53 Welcome, Miss Green. I think there are a fair number of Pixies fans who don't care for Frank's solo work. The reverse isn't anywhere near as common.

Posted - 03/17/2005 : 16:36:19 Hey, welcome aboard Goddess. Glad to see some other youngish posters here. I too am 16; been listening to Pixies/FB for a few years now. I guess that you're of a somewhat unique vein, being a Frank Black fan before a Pixies fan. I guess you've got a pretty good idea of his solo material, I guess you've got at the very least his self-titled, Dog in the Sand, Black Letter Days, and SMYT. If you haven't picked up Teenager of the Year yet, I'd say that'd be your best bet. It is arguably his best Pre-Catholics work, and probably my favorite solo album of his.
Frank Black and Pixies fans are generally speaking, the same people. You're pretty hard pressed, at least in my experience, to find a person who is exclusive to one of them.
Oh. I just saw a post of yours in another thread saying that you liked Vanishing Spies, so scratch that TOTY reccomendation. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of his albums. So go buy away.
