Posted - 03/03/2005 : 12:39:00 In a collective push to get our song db as chock full of information as possible, we're going to experiment with posting a new song every couple days to the forum. This is where you come in. If you know anything about the song (or are interested in trying to find out through some skilled sleuthing) then the idea is that you post your knowledge (with source if possible). If it's conjecture, that's great too (just please label it as such), because it'll help get people talking.
El Barto, the Song DB Master, will then take what elements he can from the thread and put them into the db. It should be full of tidbits in no time!
What sort of information are we looking for? Anything that gives insight into the song's meaning, creation, etc for one. As well, interesting nuggets of information.
Examples:
- Descriptions of (possible) song references
- Quotes from FB or other notables on the song
- Definitions to words you think might not be immediately obvious
If you're not sure about something, post and ask! You may jog someone's memory. |

Hello all,
I received my copy of Nadine on Friday and have had a couple of listens and I must say I really like single. I am also enjoying the live tracks as well. I know this is redundant but here's the tracklisting:
1. Nadine 2. Hermaphroditos 3. Los Angeles 4. Jane The Queen Of Love 5. Gouge Away
Tracks 2 - 5 were recorded in Regina, Saskatchewan on 4/4/2003 for CBC radio. The cover art is solid and there are head shots of each of the gents on the inside cover. Overall it did not leave this reviewer cold and should be fun for the entire family.
the thing
I might be repeating myself a little bit now...

This has all been great, I think we're going to have a kickass database of stuff when we're through. Thanks for the heads-up on that missing single, Jason.
We'll start on Everything Is New Monday. If you've put something in here, try to dig up a source for it if you can.

I don't think Jean is the one dressed in black. I haven't heard that kind of malice (comparing her to the Grim Reaper) towards her. Death is just coming to take his marriage away. |

Posted - 03/05/2005 : 07:40:49 Black said that among other things, the standout song from Show Me Your Tears, Nadine, was influenced by Ray Davies of the Kinks.
"I listen to a lot of old stuff rather than new stuff - actually I don't think I listen to any new stuff," Black told BBC World Service's The Music Biz programme.
"The past is where it's at as far as I'm concerned."

There's an interview in german where he speaks alot about the songwriting-process regarding SMYT. But my german is bad. Very bad. Maybe someone could translate (are there any germans here?, or maybe the dutch members could do it?). Anyway, my poor understanding of the statements about nadine is something like this: i think he is being asked about the personalities he crowds his songs with, and he says something like: "nadine is a character, but the song is about me and my interaction with these nadines (i think it is plural) and their influence on me.

ivandivel, your translation is pretty accurate. He is talking about only one Nadine, though.
In that article, asked about the albumtitle, Frank talks about how life confronts you with real pain at times and how that pain was a source of inspiration for him. "Everything on that album happend at the time I recorded it."
Then comes the quote. My quick attempt in translating it:
But does this process change the perception itself? For example concerning the Frank-created personalities, that inhabit his songs? “I don`t know”, Frank thinks, “take ´Nadine´ for example – that’s a character, but the song is more about me and my interaction with this Nadine and her influence on me. I´ve always done it like that, though."

The UK version has Snake Oil and Ludwigshaften. The only place Don't Clip Your Wings has appeared as a b-side has been the itunes EP, which included DCYW, Preacher's Daughter, A Dab'll Do Ya, and Show Me Your Tears. Some day it'll be on the new FB&C b-side comp, coming out later this year

Posted - 03/04/2005 : 10:50:12 don't know how usefull this is but this is what some other people had to say about it...
maybe not usefull for the db as such but might get a few more people chipping in with what they think about it...
“Black gets things off to a rollicking start with "Nadine", a song with as much boom-kaboom femme-fatale low-end shimmy as anything he's ever written. Full of lascivious thoughts about its pale-skinned goth goddesss namesake, "Nadine" never clues you in to whatever sadness the subject holds for Black. That's a hallmark of Show Me Your Tears: Black's opening up, but keeping his cards close to his chest.” – popmatters
“Frank's had his heart broken all right. But instead of bleeding all over you, he's patched it together with sawdust and string and written these thirteen bits of rough magic in memory of Nadine, Lorraine or "misfortune in her stockings," whoever she may be. It's haunted, cinematic stuff, but it's closer to Tarantino than Lynch – there's a cool cynicism leavening the visionary regret and the songs sizzle with careful rhyme and dirty rhythm.” – Counterculture
“you cannot imagine the excellent "Nadine" without the straight-backed interplay of bass, guitar and drums, the band's restraint -- and eventual release -- putting the sex into the cut.” – splendid magazine
“Whether the frustration in Nadine is fuelled by a new affair or past desire is never clear, but the sassy, mod bassline and Black's low, passionate voice conjure up a unbearable tension” – The Guardian
and I love the official quote from the website too, love it

Posted - 03/04/2005 : 01:17:59 There are some red wines that are served cold (around 10°C). Some Beaujolais for instance. However Frank's favorite, the Chateauneuf-du-Pape, is best served at room temperature (around 17°C). (no, I don't know anything about wines, I googled this)
