I so applaud Cooking Vinyl for the catholics thing going on but...
Frank Black Comprehensive DVD
...i've yet to see any of the singles vids, that's so bad of me
i could do with a box set that celebrates FB as an artist rather than just one of his bands (not just any old band though, i agree)
so, er...anyone know the number for 4AD? |

Music DVDs seem to be outselling (or are on the verge of outselling) CDs lately. I bet we do get a Frank DVD at some point, even if it's still maybe quite a ways off in the future. It'll be interesting to see what kind of promotion Frank gets when Honeycomb comes out in this post-Pixies reunion world.
I would love to see 7 Frank Black DVDs and I don't mean to try to put a damper on things. But I think this board kinda jumps the gun sometimes. Like when Frank originally made his Tom Waits comment last year, some people here were like "Oh my God, Tom Waits is producing a new Pixies album! I bet it's already finished! Frank's just playing games with us! He won't tell us that the new album has, in fact, already been recorded! I bet Frank's brother is listening to it right now! It's coming out next year! It's coming out next month! It's coming out tomorrow!"
Me, I'm a little more suspicious. More cynical maybe. I don't believe anything until a label issues hard information to the press.
As for pre-Catholics material, I have no idea what's out there. The Frank Black bootleg scene from that time has been more audio than video. You never know what's laying around forgotten somewhere, though. I DO have one 1996 Frank Black show on videotape. The quality is terrible and wouldn't be good for a DVD. It's from Minneapolis (the "Live 105 Cedar Fest", the nefarious bootlegger has written on the tape) and is shot entirely with one wobbly handheld camcorder that keeps darting around. The sound is mostly a blur. One interesting thing about it how animated Frank is on stage. If you've seen the Pixies (originally or reunited) or the Catholics, you're used to Frank standing in one spot, barely moving for a whole show. But here, he's bobbing his head around, he's moving around the stage, he's doing "rock moves" during the chord changes of "Freedom Rock". It's kind of odd. He even had some canned stage banter during this tour ("Anyone here remember the Curly Shuffle?", Frank probably said at almost every '96 show before "Two Reelers"). |

i never say never oldman, the Fb DVD is hopefully something for the future.
but something that surely would make excellant viewing and a must have for the fan
so hope the catholics vid happens, like you said, The Man brought us the idea

Hey Jason and fbc,
I realize there are two different DVD's that have been discussed here, and my post is referring to the Catholics DVD, and is in response to Jason's 2nd paragraph expressing that he wasn't counting on a Catholics DVD to be part of the Box Set, and didn't know what would be on it. I posted my opinion that I was optimistic about a Catholics DVD being part of the box set based on the fact that Frank brought it up, and I don't believe he would have said anything about it without being able to deliver, and deliver a quality DVD. I mean he has no reason to bring it up.
As for dissecting his sentences, what do you expect? After all, he is The Man. It's incredible that he posts here and I really enjoy dissecting his sentences.
And, yes, I agree with you Jason that Frank's statement that "NYC is upbeat about doing a box set" could indicate that the box set was the label's idea. But, on another hand, what may have happened is that Frank may have approached the label with "One More Road for the Hit" and "Snake Oil", and the label may have said, "hey Boss, why not let us do a Catholics Box Set." And, Frank may have said, "hey guys, that's a great idea, and while you're at it, let's include a Catholics DVD,..." or something like that.
And, yes, I would love to see a Frank DVD of the period from 1993 up to the Catholics. Seems unlikely, though, given this Catholic box set. However, Never say Never. |

i don't know what else could be on it, that's what i'm hoping some good people here can answer for us. this is the only fountain of fb knwledge that i know of, well, the only site with a dedicated to FB forum. if we don't know, who else does? Frank. damn.

the original died a death by mango so in some way this is a resurrection
true it was fb's idea for a catholics dvd, but what about those years between P's and C's
there were some amazing songs written in this period and so i'm hoping we can find some gig action to complement
in the original boxset thread, it was said a dvd would be hard to do, but i'm so glad you see it different within franks words oldman, i'm with you

In the spirit of dissecting sentences, Frank says NYC is upbeat about doing a box set, meaning it may have originated as the label's idea.
He also says "Maybe a DVD with concert and video stuff? (question mark)". Of course, it looks very, very possible that a DVD with substantial content may be part of the package, but when the announcement comes that way, I'm not considering it a certainty yet.
Also, the first paragraph of my post above is a response to "FB Conspiracy's" statement about a "comprehensive" Frank Black DVD from 4AD. Not this Catholic's thing. |

So, as you can see from Frank's post, as set-out above, it was Frank who brought up a DVD in the first place. I assume he had something in mind that he wanted to include on said DVD, such as "concert and video stuff" as he stated in his post. And, I'm sure he has his own collection of concert and video stuff (probably up in his closet, as you recall, he mentioned he had been looking through boxes of tapes from his closet for the FB&theC's B-Sides Compilations that he first posted on Feb. 2004 in "FB Making Noise" forum.)
His question to us, "Any good bootleg stuff out there?", IMO, is an attempt to ADD ADDITIONAL material to the DVD.
So, it's obvious, to me anyway, that he has some concert and video stuff and that he is considering including it on a DVD for the BOXED SET of Catholics, with or without bootleg footage from us. And, as you can see from his post, the idea of including a DVD in the Catholics' BOXED SET is his idea which he has so generously shared with us here at FB.net.

i think when fb mentioned bootlegs he was probably referring to the Catholics stuff.
you so right, we would need to find footage to back up the dvd request. but i'm hoping since frank called the pixies quits, there was some interest in him as a solo artist which began in '93. especially at his gigs.
hopefully someone here can help as only a few have posted so far. maybe they don't know, or think this threads shit. but we will track down anything that could make up a dvd.
if a record label wont do it, then we can at least try research this ourselves. something to do while we're here i guess.
and this is all in theory so far. just the next step from the petition.
it would be so cool to have the man on my tv screen away from the pixies.
this is my motivation. |

What specific and obtainable high quality live clips do you know exist? This would be a big help to you if you want to appeal to a label to put something out.
Personally, I'm not really counting on a Catholics DVD being a part of the box set, though that would be great. I won't believe it until it's officially announced at least. Just because I have no idea what material exists for it and I personally interpreted Frank's question to us about "bootleg stuff" as meaning he doesn't know what exists for it, either (though maybe he was talking about the live CD). |

so can't wait for a catholics dvd (even though the possibility according to the cult could be thin - lack of footage etc) but surely it's not much to want one of FRank as an artist himself. Yep, including the catholics too. big time!
thought you had a brilliant thread going on there Bill, anytime you want to bring back the petition, you got another name, this time we'll title it for the world to see. Maybe, just maybe, Frank will come across it.
Its a real shame it just stopped like that, espcially now as a box set is in the works.
Surely they know it's visual FB that would seriously tempt us buyers, even though some of us will buy anything (me, me, me)
Give me a few years, i'll just enrol at my local uni and learn all i need to know about the medium, you can have a discount on the very first copy i produce. fuck it! to you it's free.
