Wasn't there a rumor going around a few months back that Frank and Jim may be collaborating on something?

I'm a big fan, even if it is only three chords,...i guess i must like the ones they play.

I must say I wouldn't be (too) surprised to learn that certain songs like 'Some Candy Talking' or 'Sidewalking' influenced the Pixies in a way or another.

The bit about Steve Albini editing it out was from a solo performance of "I'm Amazed," but I could never make out that other part he muttered - it may very well be the Jesus and Mary Chain words you suggest, I'll go listen to it.

Nothing is ever something.

There ia recording of a Pixies song that Frank is playing accoustically. He stops and says this is the part that Steve Albini (?) had edit out. After saying that he continued to say "this is the Jesus and Mary Chain part." Can't quite remember what song he is playing but I think it is from the Lowlands accoustic backstage jam. Could be wrong with the particulars but I am sure that he makes direct reference to the Jesus and Mary Chain. For what it is worth!

I don't agree. I hear J&MC on Trompe and in the Euphrates B-Side, but elsewhere there's so much else. Sometimes I think they recorded Surfer after listening to nothing but Big Black and Husker Du. Sometimes I think Bowie. I think that's the great thing about that band -- they drew from so many influences but sound original.

It's pretty clear they had a wide listening palette. Every once in a while, I'll be tooling through some old mp3s -- even stuff like The Damned, Fall, or Stooges -- and I'll hear a guitar squawk or a vocal tic that makes me think ... Hmmmmmn?

Frank's famous request for musicians who liked Peter, Paul and Mary *and* Husker Du was on the mark.

Side note: I love how simple J&MC's music was. That idea that they'd be the Velvet Underground meets the Beach Boys was brilliant. Perhaps I'm just a luddite, but I'll take the simple and visceral over the complex and histrionic any day.

I love the Jesus and Mary Chain. The Pixies cover of 'Head On' got me into the Pixies in the first place. Although the JAMC did use 3-chord song progressions, they did it successfully and made infectious pop songs for over 10 years. Look at the 3-chord "punk" bands now, they all suck (imo).

To answer the original question, I don't think that "Olypus Mons" is a direct rip-off of "Here Come's Alice." They're simalar but in no way are they the same and I don't think one is a derivative of the other.

I suspect the Pixies ripped off 'Head On' :)

Btw, I like the JaMC - at least their last albums - and I think W. Reid is one of the greatest rock guitarists I've ever heard.

Sorry.

Well, I agree with you that the chord progression is the same, but here's the problem (and it's the main reason I HATE the Jesus and Mary Chain): It's an extremely common chord progression! Hell, it couldn't get any more common, and yet the Jesus and Mary Chain LITERALLY use that exact same chord progression IN NEARLY EVERY ONE OF THEIR SONGS! So I'd say they're the ones with the problem.
