Dan Penn and Chips Moman wrote it... the Flying Burrito Brothers do a great cover of it, as well..

Isn't that a cover of some blues legend's song?

I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank

Hit the City is my favourite on the album too.
Good album, but not enough for Honeycomb!

P.S. Wedding dress is also very good!

i'm addicted to Hit The City. my fave on the album at this moment.

the drums on that song do it for me. i wish they would have mixed them in louder. like, Surfer Rosa louder.. but then in a way having them more subdued gives the song this pent-up energy

Like the words to be spoken on the day of his induction into the Hall of Greats. It ain't exactly a busy place.
Well said, CoF. They're the words I can never find. But somehow know..

In 15 years, people will be playing these songs of FB's (particularly his solo stuff) as classics and as though they've always been loved. He's the closest our generation has ever come to The Beatles, except that radio has changed too much for the worse to grant him the due deserved.

and yes, "atom in my heart" strucks me also.

because it's true.
is it only Frank Black who has this effect. It is to me.
for some reason I just hold his work so high above all the rest.
that's the only place it deserves. the very top.

He is the Greatest. Time and the songs will prove this.

I agree two reelers, I think it's one of his best too. I can't really compre his work, because each one I love for their songs, and their differences. Yet all seem have that FB edge that makes them so similar.

Sing For Joy, Selkie Bride, Honeycomb to name the obvious few.
At the moment I'm loving Atom In my Heart. I get caught out by the chorus and it's a beautiful thing.

"Is your mind gone, are you dog tired, do you feel like you can't get no worse."
(You done it again Frank, another killer chorus)

Wait. What's this:

"You burn inside me like a star. An atom in my heart"

Isn't this song just the best.
two reelers Posted - 01/14/2005 : 01:16:18
IMHO (current), honeycomb is one of his best works.
i mean, with us being hardcore fans, there is a lot of arguments for each song and each album, and of course, we love them all. but at the end of the day, in some way TOTY shines a bit brighter than the others. and i think, honeycomb has the same kind of quality or appeal as TOTY.

Now I got to listen to Honeycomb again, Sing for joy, it's a beautiful music to wake up with a good mood!

I'm liking Honeycomb more than I liked SMYT at first, and I liked it a lot!

I agree with *mekitten. Meeeeeeeeeeeeeow!
"Selkie Bride" and "Sing for Joy" do stand out the most.

Oh, I didn't mean that. I only asked because eebee mentions if anybody was let down by Honeycomb. That's all. sorry for any confusion

(anyway, i shouldnt be talking to you, you have less posts than me)
(security! has this girl been initiated yet?)
starmekitten Posted - 01/13/2005 : 17:38:26
At first I wasn't sure about it, my initial impressions going along the lines of 'fuck me FB's gone all dire straits' because it seemed very mellow with twiddly guitar, but on second listen it had sunk in and I liked it for that very reason. It's a great evening wind down listen, and good to work to. It's quite grown up music.

'Honeycomb' 'Selkie Bride' and 'Sing for Joy' stand out to me most.

And it's Frank, the guy can SING!

I don't think though, posting about mark lanegan band in a mark lanegan thread is all too out of place.

You're too kind.

And I'm not mocking you, no way. You link away.
I have nothing to do tonight 'cept sleep, so i'll check it out.

Oh, were you let down by Honeycomb too, starmekitten?
starmekitten Posted - 01/13/2005 : 16:32:13
Its both upbeat and slow, both raw and smooth, both visceral and touching. It's an impressive album, I haven't heard any earlier stuff but I like this. His voice vaguely Waits ish in it's moody 'coolness' offset nicely by the female vocals. A very rounded album and worth listening to. If you are interested and not mocking me I can link you to a site where you can listen to 'tasters' of the tracks.

What's it like, Bubblegum?
Acoustic? Slow? Lyrically genius? Amazing chord progressions?
Please pray tell.
