Frank has stated that the Live-to-2 recording method is an aesthetic choice more than a financial one, but I've always felt that was his way of artistically justifying a business necessity. How else could he have afforded to release so much music in such a short time?

Now that Frank has more financial freedom than he ever has, do you think he will return to the "studio" aesthetic of FB and TOTY? Was 2-track a financial necessity or has he truly tired of the overdubbing and tinkering? Will he re-assemble the Catholics or put together a new group of more expensive "hired guns"? Speculate people!

Will I ever reach 1000?

Recording to two-track was an aesthetic not a financial move.

Honeycomb and the unnamed album which shall follow it were both recorded multi-track. Overdubs did not play much of a part in the process, however---the main benefit of tracking each instrument on a separate track was to allow the luxury of the "mixing" process more than anything else.

Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Festivus, Happy New Year.

best,
Jon

I'm already wanting to hear what the next one after Honeycomb will sound like (Its seems to have been around ages now). And I bet not a single song has been written for it yet. Stupid Me.

(Pixie inspired? Mmm...)

I will take that bet
It's become evident over the years
that Frank writes songs all the time
and uses songs from the past when he records a new album
so I bet that there are songs lying around after honeycomb
Besides, it seems that Honeycomb is gonna be 1 disc instead of the 2 mentioned by Jon, so the other album is already recorded.

Well the FrankBlackFrancis treated disk was certainly recorded multi-track and Frank states he likes the way it sounds. I thought I saw somewhere that he was trying to persuade the Pixies to record in his "studio in Oregon", so perhaps he has had a new studio set up.

Me too thinks he's recorded this way for the sound and overall quality. Even if he were broke, he would have found a way to record like this. I can't wait to listen to Honeycomb to hear the difference in sound to the Catholics work.

The mind boggles at the thought of what Fb could pull out of his sleeve next. Honeycomb live. Who could re-create what those group of musicians have supposedly done (sorry, not heard the record) in Nashville?

Hope he keeps making more and more and more.

Recording artists with even less money at their disposal than Frank in the Catholics still produce multi-track records with overdubs and things. Sometimes when it's noted that those Catholics records are made live in the studio, I think we understate how much work and care really went into them. If you just want to save money, there are probably more efficient ways of doing that than recording live with up to 9 musicians all playing together and your lead guitarist switching from his six-string to the pedal steel or the organ in the middle of the song.

I think Frank putting together his own mobile studio (which was used to record his last three albums) has a lot to do with how he could afford to lay down so many songs in a short time.

I do as well, though I think that he has an increasing interest in classical so I'd like to see a TOTY with lots of instrumentation, which doesn't lend itself so well to L22. I don't think Honeycomb was recorded L22 either, but maybe this is more genre related than anything.

i honestly think his choice to record 2-track is an entirely creative one.
