I'm listening to this song right now on perpetual repeat. I've seen its name before, but decided to finally try and find it and got it off Soulseek tonight. The organ is what does it. The song is haunting, beautiful, sincere, all the best of a frank black song. Does anybody hear what I am saying, do you people like this song like I'm loving it.

a single bullet loaded in each one

this song, above them all? Franks got plenty of songs that invite the listener on a journey. St francis dam disaster, Massif Central, old black dawning. But there is something, or many things that pan American highway just does so right as to making it, at least for me, the greatest rode trip ever. this isn't about truckin, or a magic carpet ride, Pan American Highway is about the end. "to go all the way, south"

Yeah Man this song is great, I hear you on the "perpetual repeat"!

If you love this song and you just download a few songs at a time you should really get the whole One More Road for the Hit, I mean its got several "perpetual repeat" worthy songs. When I first got 'One More Road for the hit', I had "Preacher's Daughter" on 'Perpetual repeat'. And there's others 'perpetual repeat' worthy on OMRFTH:

La Cigare Volant
Preacher's Daughter
Pan American Highway
Living on Soul
Pray For The Girls

there's more but those are my "perpetual repeat" songs
......Then there's "Snake oil"

This song makes me think of snow. Right after I downloaded it we went for a drive in the snow. Beautiful song, beautiful scenery. Good memory.

I listened to it one week ago while traveling on the routa panamerica saliendo de Buenos Aires (the road has two versions in south america).
It s as good as listening Calistan on the California Highways.
A great song of course, but would anyone agree that it is quite poorly recorded? Just like constant sorrow man.

It's a brilliant song. Great production too.

"I packed up my gun and got on the plane"?
Autobiographical?

Yes I realise this is 3 years old now

When I did Five Favorites a year or so ago this song was the overwhealming favorite of everybody who "played".

It is a B-side to a single which I have, although I can't remember which one right now.

It was on the Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day sessions, and I think it might have been a B-side as well. It was never on a commercially released album.

I kinda classify this song as a poor mans version of the Ryan Adams autobiographical masterpiece 'Oh My Sweet Carolina' of Heartbreaker...download that and it will truly blow your mind...
floop Posted - 11/23/2004 : 10:32:39
as far as i know, it's very autobiographical. it makes sense to me..

Great song, but, I got addicted to it and totally overplayed it. Not just the cd, but, in my mind. It was stuck there for a couple of weeks. Now it has that 'not so fresh feeling' attached to it. I hate when I do that to great songs...
Triakel Posted - 11/23/2004 : 07:50:35
I loved this song the moment I heard it. Used to work with a Nebraskan who howled "maybe someday we'll make Omaha home" everytime it cycled on the boombox.

Made me realize that "Kansas" shirt Frank used to wear in the press photos wasn't entirely ironic.

A pure chef d'oeuvre (masterpiece) like Annoucement. Can't tell wich one is better. I pressed a vinyl best-of with one on each side...

If memory serves, his father spoke of possibly one day making the drive as a family. I don't recall whether this was thought of fancifully or as an actual plan.
billgoodman Posted - 11/14/2004 : 04:53:15
well don eduardo, since DITS most of his songs are autobiographical
I reckon this song is extremely autobiographical though

i remember hearing somewhere that this was an autobiographical song....anyone else?

3rd Annual Australian Frank Black Countdown August 2003 - all involved parties rank EVERY released FB song from FB self/titled to the present - average ranks are calculated - beer (or suitable substitute) is added (mostly in drinking-game form - ie. rate a song well below its average and you drink a punishing amount), then sit back and enjoy a day of frank black....the only problem is quite often memory of the top songs is somewhat limited the next day
dogjones Posted - 11/13/2004 : 15:51:51
kinda reminds me of a song tom petty would do...style-wise anyway

love the song, btw.
Helmut Posted - 11/13/2004 : 03:30:39
Yeah it is a great song. Thank god it'll finally get a proper release with the Catholics B-sides are rarities double album.
johndietzel Posted - 11/12/2004 : 23:35:45
It's a real ballad, but with a bridge. It has one of those "this is the last song I wrote before I offed myself" feelings to it. I don't mean depressing--just like guileless submission to the audience.

Thank you for the help that I like it.

Like McDonald's?

Seriously, though, this is probably one of Frank's best songs. I should listen to it again soon.

I sincerely love this song. It somehow reminds me of Christmas. Call me crazy.

I think it might be the conviction that Frank sings with albeit with a sombre mood.
Will he ever travel the Pan American Highway? Do many bands get to take that route?

I had me a vision!

It's step, hip, step, pivot! Are you trying to piss-off the volcano?!
peter radiator Posted - 11/12/2004 : 10:18:40
Everyone always talks about how great this tune is, but I've never cared for it. I actually find it meandering and rather forgettable.

Maybe I need to try again.

Everything about this song is wonderful, I could (and have) play it all day. Haunting is a good description. Has the same effect on me as SFDD.

I find the bridge a bit disturbing though
it's a lovely bridge but doesn't seem to fit
or the recording makes it sound like it does not fit in

I think it is absolutely one of his best songs. It's so personal too. Haunting and sad.

It is quite good, although it does not make my top ten.
